Pressure Cooker Question
    #1844124 - 08/23/03 10:07 PM (14 years, 3 months ago)

Hi Everyone. I have recently purchased a new dial gauge for my pressure cooker because the old one was very much out of calibration. When I unscrewed the old one, I found some gunk in the threads that might have been sealant of some kind. The new one, one the other hand, came with no kind of sealant or anything. I have lost the instruction manual, and after a good 30 minutes searching the net for advice on the topic, I can find none.

My question is this: When installing the new gauge, is it necessary/important to add any kind of sealant or anything to the threads before screwing it on to prevent pressure leaks?

I know how dangerous these things can be if steam is allowed to leak out at high pressure. I just don't want to end up with a problem on my hands because I didn't know any better.

Please help! Thanks!
FanaTEK

15psi is fuck all in the overall scheme of things, nothing bad is going to happen if a bit of steam leaks.
Compressed air tools operate at many times that pressure.
Just put the gauge on and see if steam leaks. If it does, then think about fixing it.

Things aren't particularly dangerous if steam leaks.  It's only dangerous if there's no way for steam to leak, and you're overpressure.

That being said, sit it in there and test it out.  If it leaks too much after getting to pressure, then think about using some kind of grease to seal the threads.

Pressure Cookers are designed to release any excess steam that is produced, so it does not matter how much it leaks if it reaches and maintains a steady pressure. Actually if it is maintaining pressure, then the amount it is leaking is required for the amount of energy you are putting into the PC with your stove. If you would like it to leak less (maybe less noisy:)), once you reach a steady pressure, just turn down your stove a little so that you are not putting as much energy into your little autoclave. But make sure that you don't turn it down so much that the pressure decreases!
