Felt (SFD replacement) suppliers in Canada
    #18441238 - 06/19/13 07:47 AM (11 years, 6 months ago)

Hi, after reading the TL http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/14186384/fpart/5/vc/1 and barakanaten's http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/14488446 teks, I need some SFD or felt, but since felt seems to be as good as SFD for much less money I'll go with felt. The only problem is that I can't find the brand names in my country, so I'm looking for alternatives. I've found these. What do you think of them?

http://www.amazon.ca/Assorted-Pack-Acrylic-Craft-Felt/dp/B00557AB66/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1371648716&sr=8-1&keywords=craft+felt

http://www.amazon.ca/Sample-Craft-Felt-1-2MM-Thick/dp/B00AC6RW44/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1371649332&sr=8-7&keywords=craft+felt

http://www.amazon.ca/Floor-Protectors-Furniture-Pads-Craft/dp/B004FLTQNM/ref=sr_1_27?ie=UTF8&qid=1371649362&sr=8-27&keywords=craft+felt

Since felt is used for chair protectors I don't know if they would be good for mycology use... Also the colored ones appears to be very flexible, not rigid like Barakanaten said it. If I can't find some felt I'll go for the good and old http://www.mycopath.com/synthetic-filter-discs-large-mouth-90mm-12-p-91.html

thanks:thumbup:

I bought the stiffened eco-fi felt sold at Michaels and it's suppose to be right on target as being the right one, and I can hold it up to the light and see the light coming through holes in the material.  So it makes me think I still haven't found the right one.  I would think mail ordering this stuff even with approval might lead to bad results.

My experience led me to steer away from the stuff and I am using SFD now.  I got Polyfil, paint suit tyvek & easyfelt and SFD's and I'm just a newb collecting it and examining it.  I'm wasting too much money :crazy2:

A bit expensive but the largest clear tote I've found.  Great if you want a large SGFC that can easily do both trays and cakes.  If you decide to go all out on a SGFC, be sure to get coarse perlite.  It keeps it cleaner and allows better FAE and humidity.

If you can afford them, SFDs are best. They'll last longer than any other alternative.

Where do you got your SFD's? I've searched on many sponsor websites and the shipping prices are like twice the price of the SFD's...
I can afford them... but  :nohellno:

I forget where I got mine, but I'm in the US anyway, so shipping would be different.

And I'll say they're worth it. Like I said, they're expensive but they'll last forever. If you do TL's lid TEK, they'll outlast your lids.

Same for me, I'm in the US.  I bought from Mycopath which seem to be the cheapest for 12 of them.  I bought another item which brought down shipping when factored in together.  I cut up 3 of them into 3rds and made 9 smaller filters for inoculation jars and I'll use the remaining 9 as whole ones for G2G and I'll probably not need anything else for the rest of my hobby.  Not much considering the piece of mind I'll get.  Would not think it would be more than an extra $5 to Canada, but I certainly could be wrong.
