Switch to wheat of some sort.
I find WBS to be much more pleasant than the smell of rye. And just straight sorghum wheat or soft winter wheat berries have an even nicer smell.

Get her to start hanging out at the local brewery during brew day. You'll fall in love with the smell of cooking/PCing grains. Oh, liquid coffee helps the smell during the soak & boil process, too. But not the PC process, unfortunately.

Well, at least she's in the kitchen. She can wash your jars, totes, etc. Oh, and make some sandwiches.

Try using a flame tamer/diffuser... It will more evenly distribute the heat from the uneven burner and also cool it down a little before it gets to the pot.

Cheapie PCs are not meant for direct flame either. They'll warp, check your manual. AAs are probably about the only ones OK for direct flame.

Not so.
As long as they have water in them, they can't exceed the temperature of water at operating pressure, and this won't warp a pressure cooker. If the OP broke jars it was for some other reason such as popping the weight off at the end of the cycle, running out of water, or failure to use a trivet on the bottom.
The reason cheapo PCs warn against using large propane burners is that if the blowout plug is released it won't let enough steam escape to prevent overpressure if the burner is at full level. RR

This is what I use. I got it because I use it for camping also. It's awesome though. I like the high output to get my grain boil done fast when prepping grains, and also to get my p Pressure cooker up to heat and pressure fast and then I switch to the lower output. Which is still a beast. Just helps me save a lil time here n there. Anyway. Checkout the single burners there. And maybe shop around to find it cheaper online from a third party. I always cook outside. Even in winter. Between doing it to keep my girl from nagging, and because the house propane can run out and we have to pay a refill fee when it runs dry so I'd rather run a portble tank dry accidentally than the house tank. And it gives me a reason to hang in the garage and drink beers n listen to tunes. Kinda like my version of fiddling around with cars or what have you. Lol. Anyway, good luck. Output should not be an issue. Just gotta know how to find the right amount. http://www.campchef.com/stoves/outdoorsman-high-low-combo-double-burner-stove.html

You can get a propane turkey fryer for 50$ at walmart.com.
It also comes with a 30qt kettle. It's perfect for brewing beer and I'm sure it would work fine with a PC.

You could always prepare your grains without boiling them! Check the grain preps in my signature's main teks; they involve just pouring a ratio of boiling water onto grains in a cooler/tote and letting them hang in it for several hours. I never get the smell!

No not really, I've never noticed it, and neither have my roommates or lovers. I just asked and indeed nobody has noticed smell during PC. So, now nobody smells it at all.
I do use plastic containers in a small cooker so they don't get over-cooked which I'm sure helps, but even before grass seed in plastic I used rye in quart jars. Never got a noticeable smell much less a smell problem.

I think the smell of rye is good, but anyways I have a cheap pc and sterilze rye with no problem. I have direct flame(propane stove). Even if the flame is way high there is no way for the pc to go over the temperature, that's just basic to the nature of pcs, they release excess steam once a certain temp/pressure is reached. When you put you glass jars in the pc were the sides of the jars touching? They expand a little when heated and if you have them packed tight they will crack. RR said that in another post.
good luck

I love smell of rye cooking. Doesn't bother me at all. I don't know. I use an AA and always cook with 14 jars. Maybe it's just that amount that's causes the smell?

Give her an orgasm before you pressure cook, then turn on some fans and air out the house while you are doing it. I can guarantee you won't hear another complaint, in fact, you will most likely get the oposite effect.

Ha! Are you telling him to condition his wife like Pavlov's dog? To expect sex/orgasms when she smells cooked rye grains. How deceptively creative...

Before not after.

Pavlovian Conditioning her would be borderline immoral, creativity lies in achieving this with somewhat of a reverse order; eventually the smell of cooking grains stimulates a positive and content state with out direct conditioning.
Truth be told, it's probably because I am airing the house out. Of course it's always fun to pretend I am a diabolical geniuse!
