Huge outdoor bed
    #18173350 - 04/26/13 06:32 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

So after careful consideration, I dumped a ton of spawn earlier this week. It was a PE iso that is 6+ months old, not stored in a fridge. Also i had a few jars a few months back that I G2G the shit out of, so all my spawn is pretty old. Most of these jars were not contam'd, but a lot of my bulk grows were getting trich during fruiting (This PE iso WAS good, but i quit growing for a while and neglected to preserve it properly). So I made an outdoor bed!

Consists of:
9 shoe totes (1 qrt spawn/3 qrts coir/verm)
1 tub (already pinning, but go trich, 4 qrts spawn/ 10 qrts coir/verm)
5 gallons of various spawn, but mostly PE
6 bricks of coir
16 qrts of verm
10 gallons of Hpoo
A soaker hose laid in between layers of spawn

I went to a tractor supply and got enough straw for an entire summer of huge outdoor grows (which i plan too since bulk ingredients are so cheap/free). I didnt chop any of the straw, but laid a decently thick layer over the coir/verm/poo. I made the bed yesterday, and did the straw today. What i'm wondering is, is the straw even necesary? Should i pick up what i laid, chop it, hydrate it, then either mix it in with the rest or put back on top?

The next 5 days are 40% chance of rain, high 80-84 low 62ish. I'm not worried about my bed drying out, because of the rain and soaker hose.

Thanks for all the help guys

I don't see how the straw could hurt.  Well the only thing that I'd be worried about is burying your spawn too deep.

Make sure that you protect your bed somehow, pretty much everything outside wants a piece of it- Birds, rabbits, squirrels, dogs that eat anything and BUGS!

When I made my bed last year it looked like this (you can see the grow here)

Apparently it wasn't protected enough as the next day it was tore up by some critter.  I fortified things a little more and after that no more critter problems.

After doing a few outdoor beds I decided that I'd never put anything in the ground again.  Why? Because slugs and other shit bugs will inevitably find and wreck your bed/fruits.

If I were to do another out door grow I'd get a kiddie pool, drill several little drainage holes at the bottom of it and keep it elevated off the ground (maybe have it sitting on bricks)

Good luck :thumbup::thumbup:

I throw all my spent tubs, unwanted grain, etc over my fence (where my bed is) and I get some deer and bird, but there is still a lot of stuff there so they aren't really eating it a ton. I saw some rollie polices today there so we'll see what that does. I'll check daily and see id there is any damage.

I have a few kiddie pools right now, may give a raised bed a go in the next few weeks

You'll change your mind about drilling holes in the bottom after your first time doing it. Holes = FAE = lots of bottom pinning.

I do a lot of outdoor cultivation and I prefer to use containers, although many TCs advise against using containers outdoors.

I use salt as a protective fence around my containers and I never have a problem with them. If you can get the chunkier salt it will stand up to the rain better.

If you keep your containers covered you won't need to worry about drainage. Another nice thing about lids is it's easier to control the humidity inside your containers.

Outdoor grows are much less labor intensive than indoor grows, even when using containers.

Was that centipede or whatever living INSIDE the mushroom? If so, holy shit man that's intense. I wonder what it's life was like while living inside that thing :crazy2:

Well of course, the weather changes. No note rain for a while. Should input a tarp over it to help get my humidity up? Some of the sub o have there have pins, and I don't think they'll fair well in 45% rh

I know, fucker ate his own weight's worth (probably more)  I'm looking at this fat pin one day thinking to myself, NICE thats gonna be a big boy.  The next day it's the same size, I'm like what gives?  So I examined it and noticed that the bastard hollowed it out from the backside.

Outdoor grows are awesome for sure.  Very easy and other than the grain jars, you don't pay for shit.  :rimshot:

I actually thought about throwing a lid on, maybe another kiddie pool on top with some holes on the side for FAE.

When I mentioned holes on the bottom I was thinking a few holes, nothing crazy.  Just so in case there's a big rain storm it doesn't get too saturated.  That extra moisture the sub gets from the rain along with high humidity in the air give a one two punch.  I noticed that when nature works with you, you get the best luck.  I was also intending on making a sub so deep that it'd be unlikely the whole thing would colonize to the bottom.  I noticed after digging up some of my outdoor grows that the myc travels down only so far.

PS:  Still using those hole plugs on my monos:toast:

I didn't remember that it was you who'd asked me about those

I've been using them for a few years now just because they make things a bit tidier.

If only I could find some small dampers like these. I could leave them in from start to finish.

More contam sub has been added to the bed. I'll add a little bit more today, but that should be it. This run of pe has been detrimental, mostly on my last because I knew how old my culture was :/

I'll take some pics today. The straw is really helping hold the moisture in the bed. Soaker hoses are amazing as well. $6 for 25 ft.... love it. I have 2 now. I just pray to get some fruits off it it soon. I'll check some of the pins that were growing g and see if they continued to grow or aborted due to stress.

Well something has been tearing up my bed at night. Luckily the critters havent attacked the already colonized sub, so I have a good amount of pins growing. What sucks is it seems that trich is still spreading throughout the bed...Hmmm. I thought outdoors helps stop trich.

Anyways, I'm going to the store today and seeing if I can get some chicken wire or something of that nature to help deter the animals eating my bed. Any suggestions on what to get, those of you that have already had this issue?

Just putting it outside isn't going to beat down the trich. Trich goes outside all over the place, just not in huge patches like you see indoors when it appears as an opportunistic infection on your sterile substrates.

Your project being dug up is why people like RR don't advocate the use of grain spawn outdoors.

I personally use containers when doing outdoor grows. IMO, it's the best of both worlds.

You could probably lay down chicken wire down over your patch and depending on the size of the critter that's been doing the digging it may help to prevent further digging.

It looks like most of the bed wont be affected with trich, the cube mycelium is taking its grasp over the bed.

I laid down some plastic mesh (1/2in holes) over almost all of the bed and put rocks over the ends so nothing can crawl in. It looks as if something bigger than birds, squirrels, etc. have been getting at my bed. I think its deer, as i always see deer in my back yard. I'll check back tomorrow and see if it works. Wish me luck!

Pics FOR SURE tomorrow. I have some of today, but i'd rather post pics with the mesh added.

As much as I tried, deer and birds tore that thing apart. It was in the woods basically, so I tried my hardest. I put some plastic chicken wire over the bed, and they stepped on it and stuff. Also, my spawn was old and also PE, so I wasnt really expecting much (I spawned the outdoor bed because that spawn wasnt worth spawning to tubs indoors).

My contam'd subs that I buried did produce a good amount of fruits.

I learned a lot of things though. First thing is, do it in my yard where no big animals can get to it. Also, soaker hoses only work if there's only 1 or 2, not multiple.

I'm making a smaller outdoor bed tomorrow inside my yard with extra spawn and substrate. We'll see how it goes. I'll make a new thread for that

I've got about 10 beds outdoor at the moment around the yard n some in gh outside. 8 in gh ATM and 2 truly outside.  6 of the eight in the gh rent doing so hot. There are patches of myc but just a little less amount of trich. I'm hoping in the end the myc beats the trich or at least I get some fruits. The 6 that aren't that bad are from my first few bales of straw that were older and not as nice looking. Also I didn't do anything to pasteurize.  I've since started a bleach pasteurize. The 2 other beds were with bleach pasteurized newer straw and they are looking great so far as colonizing. Then there is one truly outdoor bed that I threw a bunch of slightly contained jars, unpasteurized that is doing really good. And one true outdoor bed pasteurized that I only did on Friday that hasn't really started receiving so much yet but decent in some spots. So far I've learned even though the greenhouse is round about outdoors, it would serve me well to pasteurize sub in there.  Outdoor patches seem to not have a problem whatsoever.
