I need an explanation because i'm baffled :/

Hi there,
So last night, I dried out some mushrooms using my oven and a fan (don't have a dehydrator... YET!) and they were nice and crispy dry and crumbled in my fingers when I rubbed them between. I would consider this cracker dry.
Some the bigger caps were still a tiny bit bendy but other than that... cracker dry.
Anyway, I weighed them (22.45g) and then I put them in a sealed container with some Epsom salt (on a make shift tin foil rack - salt has been baked).
When I woke up I checked them and they were all bendy again and felt moist so I put them under a fan to dry.
I just checked them and they are no where near as dry as they were last night but now they only weigh 16.55g?!?!?! WTF! How?!

The water that was trapped in the inside evenly dispersed and some of it dried once it reached the surface?

I don't follow?
The container had been sealed for days before so any moisture in there would of already been absorbed :/

I really dont know, but this has happened to me before and what I thought it was was that the meatier/thicker parts of the mushrooms didn't get completely dry, so through osmosis the more moist parts made the dry parts of the mushrooms a little wet.
and as for them seeming wetter but weighing less maybe it because of what I just explained but some of the moisture got absorbed by the salt, so although they seemed more moist they actually had a little less moisture in them it was just more evenly distributed.

Hmm, you could be right. Any ideas how to prevent it from happening? I'm gonna leave the mushies drying all day and then put them in again tonight. I'll just have to try and make sure they are 98% dry before they go in :/

Just dry them for longer, honestly I could never get my oven to dry them right.
What I always use to do was just aim a box fan so its blowing down and elevate it with like some jars or something so it can circulate air and then put a screen on top of and put the mushies on that and let them sit there until a little after they're cracker dry, then put them in a bag/container with some desiccant and that seemed to work good for me.

This has happened to me before, even while using a proper dehydrator. I broke it down and the answer I found was what MJ has said, about osmosis.
In order to store them make sure they are 100% dry, not 98%. Any moisture will destroy the kids.
I have found that 12 hours at 95F in my dehydrator seems to dry them all the way through... also without any risk of eliminating any psilocybin from overheating.
Hope I've helped, Midnight

You should probably 'recharge' your drying crystals as it sounds like they're saturated.

Thanks, I thought the idea of using desiccant after fan drying was to absorb any moisture that is left in the mushrooms? Or have i got that arse to tit?

Im sure I heard somewhere that when the drying "salts" are hydrated they will go clearer. They are brilliant white and have been since the first time I baked them :/

I'd give it a try because there's moisture coming from somewhere.

That's the problem. It's hard to tell how close they to cracker dry when they're not. If you're oven drying you gotta take it all the way until they're complete cracker dry and not depend on the desiccant afterwards (except for storage).

^this
Desiccant is used for storage, not drying. Use your oven/blowing fan/dehydrator to dry your mushrooms cracker dry, including caps, then store them with activated desiccant in order to keep any moisture from getting to them. If you use the desiccant to finish the drying process then it is essentially useless during storage because it would just be holding moisture inside the bag.

Ahhhhh it's just the idea of using heat. >.< I get that a oven can reach lowish temperatures.

As long as your mushrooms don't get above 200°f they'll be fine.

Yeah, except that even folks like RR have said that on a 1000F BBQ the mushrooms retain their potency. And threads have been made where people have tried their damnedest to kill potency with cooking and if I'm not mistaken, they all failed
Mr. E, it sounds like the first response was spot on.
If they continue to lose weight, there was still moisture trapped in there.
Just get a dehydrator to never have to worry about this problem again. Why are you so hesistant?

once i put shrooms in a box with silica gel and instead of drying it out it became a soggy shit. I ended up buying a dehydrator and aahhh man i should have done this before.

I set my fan assisted oven to it's lowest which is 100C and I place a desk fan infront of the oven with the door wide open. Its basically a big dehydrator... 1 fan blowing hot air in and over the shrooms ans the other circulating and extracting the moist air Besides, I've already done this a few times in the oven and tripped balls so I know they are good. Just haven't used desiccant before because I have needed to nomnomnomnom

I put em back in the oven for an hour and they dried up nicely so I put some of the epsom salts in a sock and tied it and then put the shrooms and the socked salts in an airtight container together. They are A.OK now:)
I want a dehydrator but at the minute I literally have NOOO spare funds so its a case of when I DO have the funds.
You all want me to have a dehydrator so bad why not all chip in and buy me one out of good will? Start a Mr.E's dehydrator collection

Wrong. When cracker dry they will snap like a match stick with the least amount of handling. Yours weren't dry.
Next time, use a fan for a few days before putting them on desiccant. Save the oven for cooking food. RR

same here man, gotta learn some lessons the hard way.
dehydrators are the bomb. followed by desiccant for storage will assure healthy mush to nom.
