Simple question: If I was to pc some equipment like scalpel, spoon, glass petri dish, 1/2 pint jar etc. How long should I put it in the PC? None of the stickys on sterilization have this basic question, I searched the forum etc.
thanks

I've always assumed that half an hour would work, and it seems to have. I normally run at least an hour though as there's grain jars in the PC at the same time.
Last time I forgot to sterilize the scalpel so just boiled it in a pot of water for 10 minutes, then of course flamed before use - no contams from that.

Grains should be sterilised for 90 minutes at 15 psi
pf cakes should be sterilised for 60 minutes at 15 psi
Tools will only need a shorter time probably 20 minutes would be plenty.
If yoru doing them all together then you will have to sterilise for the full time of whatever is the longest time, 60 mintues for pf jars or 90 minutes for grain jars.
otherwise you might end up with the jars not being sterilised properly.
If your sterilising syringes with water, its easier to just do in a pot of boiling water since sterilising for long times for me anyway usually ends up in an empty syringe.

Just boiling for 10-20 minutes, depending on elevation, will kill everything on your equipment. However, they have to be in contact with water or steam. Boiling the scalpel was a good example. My water is pumped up from a stream and is boiled before use to kill bacteria, viruses, and protzoa and is only boiled 10 minutes. The reason pf jars, agar, grains, etc., have to be pressure cooked longer or at all is so that the heat can penetrate to the center of the dense substrates and destroy the micro organisms living there

20 minutes is the magical time when everything dies. The reason things need to cook for longer is that it takes time for the heat to penetrate jars and substrates. Metal tools will heat up fast, so 20-30 minutes will probably do.
Put items in foil envelopes that you can unpack in your clean area.
If you do not need surgery level sterility, a 3 minute ethanol bath will do. Wipe the last residue off in the clean space before use. But remember that it's flammable if you are flaming needles or something in the same session.

The reason grain jars and pf cakes have to be pressure cooked for so long is due to the temperature all the grains have to reach within the internal center of the jars. Equipment would just have to reach a certain temperature to kill the germs/microbes, so a boil even! I recommend alcohol wipes and paper towels!
