Blusher?

Habitat: I think it was under a maple, or at least a deciduous tree with maple like leaves
Bruising: The red color visible in the cross section didn't seem to change over time. Looked pretty much the same even after a few hours.

Info on the edibility of the American blushers seems pretty scant, but I'm under the impression that a lot of people eat these. I'd like to try it, but I'm pretty apprehensive.

It seems like Bloodworm said something about eating them not long ago, I'd check with him

Yep, Amanita amerirubescens nom prov. They're toxic until thoroughly cooked.

I've never eaten any Amanita.

I have tried them and they are excellent cooked on my pizza. I know a lot of people who eat them cooked and all think they are good. I only have eaten them once. I probably will not eat them again. Its really a risky mushroom because making an ID mistake can be really really bad.

What is risky?
I mean what species are there that look like it and are toxic?
I can't think of any...
edit- i am using the word 'toxic' relatively. I mean to exclude other Amanitas that are toxic like this one is ie A. muscaria or any other species that is not deadly and edible after cooking.

To me I can tell it apart from other amanitas. But its better to error on the side of caution with newer mushroomers. I probably get 50 or more mushroom poisoning calls a year that I deal with. People eat JackO Lanterns thinking they are the Chicken Mushroom - Sulfur shelf. To me they don't look at all alike. To others I guess they are both orange and it does not matter if they differ buy one having gills and the other pores. There been a half dozen poisoning reports on here this week. Best to avoid recommending eating amanitas even though some are good edibles, its not worth the risk to many people.

I hear ya. o8u I think can tell the difference. He has hanging around with us for a bit and is pretty smart. They grow up so fast.
(i dislike this graemlin but it seemed perfect. Sorry Tmethyl. I know you love it. )
But I totally hear what you are saying. Noobs really do have a hard time seeing differences the way one does after being into mushroom hunting and identification for awhile. I was that way.
Cheers

I agree I think o8u is very knowledgeable. But you never know who else is reading this and says to themselves, I think I should try some of those amanitas. Not knowing how to tell them apart. It could get bad real quick.

Aww you guys...
Well I cooked some up and I found them bitter. Maybe I overcooked them out of caution or maybe they weren't particularly good specimens, but they were pretty bad. Thanks for all your help.

I was in WV a few years back and I tried Amanita jacksonii and to me it tasted very musty and I would not eat it again. Several others there also cooked and ate a couple and one got some bathroom time. I think it was from them worring about did they make a mistake or not. Sometimes people can make them selves sick from thinking did I just make a big mistake, other times rehaps they are having a reaction that most don't get.
