Achieving optimal water content in full pint jars?
    #18433880 - 06/17/13 08:41 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

Hey everyone, I am going to prepare and sterilize some pf style brf jars tonight, heres the catch. They're pint jars. I know, double the chance of failure, yada yada. But I want to know what a good ratio for moisture content would be, where condensation wont drip to the bottom of the jars and in turn cause stalling, yet my jars wont dry out. I have seen a tip on another thread to add 10% less water to the mix. But I dont want to go off of what one poster says, I need some feedback, maybe even some tips from those whove successfully used pints with brf, and what YOU did to achieve it! Thanks!

Field capacity would be your best bet AFAIK.  Grab up a handful of substrate, and give it a light squeeze, a drop or a few should come out.  If you squeeze as hard as you can a small stream should come out very briefly, then stop.  That is field capacity.

If it is too dry, add more water; too wet, add verm.  It would be best to do small additions of whichever, then mix, and test again.

I also like to err on the drier side of things, as I feel too wet is worse.

Or just make double of the 2:1:1 ratio recipe pint jars if there the longer ones will take longer to colonize n some recommended a longer needle

never field capacity for cakes it should feel damp at best, you could add some verm to the mix to lighten a bit more, the problems with those jars is gravity drawing moisture to the bottom and compacting your sub

Some have told me to shift the jar around in a way counteracting gravity, others have told me not to mess with them and just let them be. I just got done steam sterilizing 5 jars plain old PF style. I'm gonna do a second sterilization tomorrow (why the hell not?) and do 2cc's per jar. Cause if I'm doubling the recipie I cant not double the amount of spores, that's just be counterproductive. I'm confident I can work these jars though. Maybe I'll do a grow log. Thanks though!

I just birthed one 310ml brf jar! I just follow the 2:1:1 verm/brf/water and make lots to fill my bigger jar along with the 'normal' sized one. Took about 2 month to colonize + 1 week consolidation.

Did you use a rwgular multispore syringe or a luquid culture? And congrats! You should definitely post up some pics to show the community that there IS success with full pints, when done correctly. I feel like there's not enough posts on here about full pint usage, and when there are, theyre all negative!

it's not that people are saying anything negative r that we haven't seen them succeed, it's just that for years we've seen and for years we will continue to see 2 half pints out perform a pint

No matter the size of the jar, the ratio is the same: 2 parts verm, 1 part BRF, one part water.

But yeah, those are almost certainly going to stall out and possibly waste your entire month colonizing them. Use short half-pints.

Yes, you can bump my old threads with a question.
Here is how I get things done.
You should take a look. :hehehe:

I used a multispore syringe, yes. Thank you. I didn't bother to consolidate too long due to the two month growth period, but the moment I see pins I will post or PM you!
