Problem with my casings...
    #1843324 - 08/23/03 02:23 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

The casings that I have growing are not really pinning at all and I cant figure out why. There are hundreds of primordia (tiny white balls) all over the trays but not much of anything is growing.

The casing method I did was this:
Used sterilized 50/50 mix for the bottom casing layer, about 1/2 inch, in a 7.5x5.5 tray. Then crumbled 1.5 half pint cakes (CREEPER strain) onto the 2nd layer for each tray. Then about a 1/4 inch of 50/50 mix with oyster shell was put onto the final layer of the casing tray. The casings were then immediately put into the fruiting chamber. Chamber climate is about 90% humid, 75 degrees, perlite used to produce humidity and vicks cool mist system for air exchange (4 hrs per day). We did not patch case. The top casing layer fully colonized in a little more than a week. A few days after this point, we only got about 2-3 pins growing (one of which that we already harvested).

So I am wondering why my casings arent pinning all over. It's been about 12 days since the casing layer has fully colonized but have only got about 2 pins on the casing.

Any suggestions will be helpful. Thanx

how is your lighting? also sounds as if you could've gotten overlay. Don't wait for the casing layer to colonize before inducing pinning conditions and moving to a terrarium, once the mycelium begins to poke up through the the top layer move to a terrarium. try waiting a couple more days, if no improvement then try scratching with a clean fork.

What I dont understand tho is, once I put the trays into the fruiting chamber, the mycelium is supposed to stop growing correct? However, in my chamber, the mycelium keeps on colonizing, even tho it is in fruiting conditions... Is it possible at this point, to apply another top casing layer to prevent it from overlaying or is it too late since I have a couple pins right now?

No, mycelium will continue to grow (momentum) that's why u should'nt wait for the casing layer to colonize before inducing pinning conditions. Search the forum for "overlay" and take a look at pics that members post, if your grow looks like that then don't apply more casing, you'll have to deep scratch.
