Mono super early pin
    #18433167 - 06/17/13 06:05 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

So I've made it to the mono tub phase, and I have a nice little 55 qt. tub with 8 qts coco/verm and 4 qts spawn. I don't have a liner or anything to block the light. It's just colonizing in a pitch black room. But today I checked it and the side has a pin, I was really shocked because from my understanding it needs to be put into fruiting conditions to even want to pin. I'm planning on just letting the tub do it's thing but I was wondering if anyone else had this happen or if anyone might know why it happened. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong, but from all the research I've done it doesn't seem like something that should even happen. Thanks!

nothing wrong with letting light on your colonizing sub.  and you should fruit at 100% colonization or if pins show up.

SO FRUIT IT BRO.

It does not have to be put into fruiting conditions in order to pin.  Many people wait until they see ~20 pins before they introduce the tub to fruiting conditions, just a personal preference though.

Light is a not a major pinning trigger.  And in fact myc benefits from a 12/12 light cycle throughout the whole grow process.

A more pertinent pinning trigger is full colonization, so, I ask you, is your tub 100% colonized?  If so put it into fruiting conditions immediately.  If it isn't at 100% it is likely that the myc has seen a contaminate, and it moving into fruiting phase.

It's not 100% colonized. it's around 60%, The tape is sealed up on the holes, so I haven't put into fruiting conditions. Hm, contams sound unfortunate. I thought I followed everything correctly. Unfortunately my camera is out of commission, but when I can upload I certainly will. If I could find my usb cable I could use my phone. If so I'll upload some later.

Bummer!  What did you use for substrate and how was it prepared?

A brick of coir mixed with 2 qts of verm (no gypsum cause I couldn't find it). I put them in 1 qt jars and pasteurized them in my PC. They got up to 160 for 90 min, let them cool over night and then I transferred to my mono.

hm, Sounds proper.  I assume you got it to a good field capacity too.  I dunno friend, sounds like you did everything to specifications.  If you are 100% those jars didnt ever get past 165F for too long then I am stumped.

An slim, but non-zero chance that contaminates can hide out in myc and not crop up for some time, even if the jars appear clean and whatnot.. RR and Frank were just discussing that in a recent thread.. Might be the case here.

If the CO2 drops it can trigger pinning early. Also if the moisture content of your substrate is too wet it may start pinning as if it were fully colonized.
