Isopropyl Alcohol 100%
    #18433126 - 06/17/13 05:54 PM (10 years, 7 months ago)

He guys,

I already have been reading a lot of stuff on this site, but can't really find a discussion about isopropyl alcohol 100%.

I did found a complete guide for cleaning and sanitation, which stated:
''Isopropyl alcohol is the most effective sanitizer of the commonly available alcohols''.

It is easy for me to find 5 litres of the 100%, but if 70% works better I want to know why, and what should the other 30% be?

~Bastiaan.

Uhhhh... What are you doing?

Sanitizing? If so, 70% is just fine.

Alcohol can never be 100% - even the rubbing alcohol bottles which say so are actually ~97%.
The rest of it is water. (The same with the 70% - eg. 70% denatured alcohol, 30% water).

70% works better because it's less volatile, therefore taking longer to evaporate, and ultimately sanitizing for a longer period of time.  The non-ISO percentage is water.

70% is better because it doesn't evaporate as quick as the 100%.  It sticks around a little longer allowing for a more thorough disinfection.

If you want to dilute the 100% iso, use distilled water.

I've never seen 100% - at least here, they are labelled 97%.  I'm sure you know that though

The reason 100% doesn't exist (commonly) is because it is hygroscopic. At 100%, it will begin pulling moisture (h20) out of the air and into the alcohol, lowering the %.

OP even if you need it as a solvent, 70% should work fine.

if you are using it as a solvent, then there might be something more efficient than iso.

I would never use 70% as a solvent.

I think it technically can be, but that's the limit for simple distillation.

Why not use grain the alcohol percentage should be high enough and for consumption should be much safer. If I remember correctly Everclear is 95%

From what I've understand it doesn't matter if you use methanol, ethanol, isopropanol or some other chemical substance, as long as it all evaporates, the pellet should be clean and pure psylocibine?

And I found this one http://www.farmaline.nl/drogisterij/bestellen/fagron-isopropyl-alcohol-5/ which states 100% but im indeed pretty sure it will be around 99,7%, and if the bottle becomes emptyer the percentage will drop rapidly.

Further on everclear is something ive never heard of in the netherlands so i probably wont be able to get it.

Still I just want to know if it is possible, and a good idea to extract with isopropyl alcohol, and if so 70% or 100%.

Thx
