does it have to be a 65K?
    #18429149 - 06/16/13 06:40 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

i have my tub in my closet which sits under a normal house light bulb for a 12/12 period.

i mean, does it really need to be a 65k bulb? i have no problem getting one, but is it necessary?

Everyone with Experience says yes. So Yes.

do a little experiment if you want

go ahead with your normal light and use a 65k on another project and compare your results. Better yet post your results on the shroomery

Ideally, you want 6.5k because it's the closest representation to daylight.  Any light between 5k-7k will suffice.  6500k lights aren't hard to find though.

Everything here is correct, save that 65k is very invisible to the human eye, on the infrared side of the spectrum.  6500K is what ya want.   The K, of course, for Kelvin, and the photon being the wavelength of photon emitted at that temperature.

I got my bulbs at wal-mart.

I am sure you think it is 60K, but that is wrong.. I could be 6k(K)  temp, but 60K is wrong.

Wien's law= Wavelength=b/T. Where b=2,8977685 X 10^-3. T=60K. Therefore the wave length =4.8296 X 10^-5.
That is, 48296.1nm wavelength

Now using a 6500K light gives off 445.811nm wavelength.. a bluish tint..

lol.  Yeah, it'll mess with your circadian rhythm if you keep it on into the night, methinks.  I just keep mine in sync with the sun; plus there isn't a beaming daylight colored glow coming from my windows.

Mine grow real nice at night, but that is because they spend the day at MPD's Blue Lagoon Mushroom & Fungus Spa Resort.

You may have to troll a bunch of places to find a 6500K lamp.  Much easier to find for tube fluoros.

Does it have to be 6500K?  No.

Is it optimal to have 6500K?  Yes.

You want to mimic nature as best you can, so getting a light bulb that is closely related to daylight from the Sun is optimal.  But the mushrooms will grow (poorly) in darkness if they have to.
