McAfee or Norton?

Which do you feel is a better antivirus program.
I have the latest releases of both of them and cant really decide which to install.
I'm leaning more towards Norton, ONLY because that is what i've been using for a few years now and have encountered only one virus (designed to thwart norton ) Otherwise, no probs.
I also realise that McAfee has a very powerful package as well. Firewall, email, worm, virii, realtime, web, etc..
Is one particularly 'better' than another??
Thanks

they both suck.
if you really know what you're doing, i'd say you'd be fine without an antivirus program. but that means not running things that you don't explicitly trust.
however, for a free virus scan, you can't go wrong with AVG free edition.

Personally I've found the combination of Norton AV & Firewall very reliable, but it also makes a lot of sense to make sure that you patch security holes in Explorer or Outlook Express (if you use them). Especially as some virii can use an exploit in OE5 to autorun viral code.

Well, I've heard Norton is one the better ones..although it's a bit bloated at 50+ Mbs. Be that as it may, I've used AVG for some time now and I'm very happy with it.

i have the newest mcafee installed. i have it disabled because it slows down the computer noticbly and the firwall makes p2p very hard and prone to crashing. norton also slows down your computer considerable. overall i would suggest you not get a anti-virus program, i have been running without one for 5 years and have only encountered a virus recently.

Have to disagree with that - I don't get any performance decrease with Norton AV and Firewall running W2K on a XP1700 based machine with 512MB of memory. Have you got any evidence to back that statement up - BTW I'm not flaming you just curious to what the slow down is - are droping a large number of FPS in Quake III or something with AV software running?
Norton Firewall is also very stable IMHO - don't get any problems with P2P apps crashing (Kazaa Lite, Imesh, WinMX, Bit Torrent) and I'm running a dedicated W2K box file sharing 24/7

I personnally hate heavy programs built with a lot of useless crap in it. I once tried Norton and was so depressed to see millions of useless functions with a lot of sharing informations with norton's site... man, it scared the shit outta me and was left with the impression that I don't really know *everything* that this prog will do on my computer. The installation wasn't completely finished and decided to delete it right away!
I stick with AVG free edition and ZoneAlarm free edition. No one running Windows will be 100% protected even if you always get the most recent updates.
BUt in my opinion, AVG and ZoneAlarm are a kick ass combination that doesn't eat a lot of ressource.

Ani antivriusprogram will slow your computer down if you have it set to do so.
Set it to scan incoming files only, not outgoing ones. Also, add the AV's working directories to the list of those exempt from scanning.
You probably just have everything turned on.
I use McAfee at work, on about 90 servers and 500 PCs. It works extremely well.
I use it at home, also.
Norton worked about as well when I used it. Whatever you do, get something, and keep it updated. McAfee will auto-update itself, and Norton probably has a similar feature.

I agree AVG is about the best, it's free, works very well, and uses hardly any system resources, unlike norton and McAfee.

I decided to install McAfee Antivirus Plat. It comes with a firewall, was pretty easy to set up, and is working great so far. It also seems faster than Norton 2k as far as scanning programs. I really like the firewall feature too Thanks for all the advice everyone. I would suggest McAfee to people in the future, although I've only had it for a day

I dont use one but I would recommend Norton if you know anything about computers. McAfee is IMO designed for the computer illiterate, its heuristics suck and e-mail protection is far too overly protective (it simply pop-ups whenever you highlight an email with an attachment which is bitch annoying). NAV can on occasion actually identify "unknown" viruses using its bloodhound technology, it simplys looks for familiar infection rountines or virus sigs but it can be effective. Norton is also a far better dis-infecter McAfee will pop-up and ask you what to do with each individual infected file (clean, quarantine, delete) whereas Norton at least attempts to clean them before asking you what to do. BTW AVG, is a "free" av you can download of the net its quite poor tho...

I say screw mcafee. After they announced that they would not protect the user's computers from the FBI's Magic Lantern, I can't trust them anymore.

McAfee works fine for me.
If you have broadband you'll want a hardware firewall/router anyway.
Didn't you get banned like 2 years ago?

That's actually incorrect. McAfee will only prompt you if you configure it that way. Otherwise the default settings are to clean the infected file. I have found McAfee to be an effective program. The day I installed it, it found and cleaned five viruses on my computer, none of which pc cillen discovered.

i agree when i was hit with a subseven gold trogen, it went right past my mcaffee... i didnt know what was wrong with my puter, but it was acting up, so i talked to some hackers i had met before, and they suggested AVG, as soon as i downloaded and installed it, it found the trogen right away..... it is the best anti virus imho.. only complaints is their update is a bit slower then the others, but when applied, it works a LOT better then the pay ones.
