Pint Jars with PF TEK!
    #18429809 - 06/16/13 09:19 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

Hey you guys. I am aware that there has been many posts about using pint jars, but they seem outdated. I want to know if anyone here has had success with pint jars and what they did to achieve it. Please dont reply bashing how I shouldve just got half pints, i know this. I apprecite any positive feedback!

Pint jars take longer to colonize, and therefore, are more prone to contamination.

debatable, usually what happens with pints is the brf gets compacted easier and stalls out from lack of GE towards the bottom of the jar.

the tek calls for half pint shorties for a reason.

But say if one pack in the brf very loosely, and inoculates with 2x the spores, wouldn't that be more efficient? I'm pretty confident that I can work the pint jars. Isn't the reason most people fail with pints is only using 1cc per jar as if doing 1/2 pints instead of 2cc's?

im not saying its impossible but still alot bigger chance for it to stall since GE cant reach very bottom of jar compared to the shorties

2cc might be a bit overkill. 2cc is really used for things like quart jars, and even then it is ok to use less solution.

QFT. if i still used syringes i would use 1cc max on quart jars. the more spores you use means more genetics.

Yeah, I feel like the most important thing is making sure the spore solution reaches towards the bottom of the jar so the myc can get a foothold down there. I still feel like if I put in the brf loosely, and flip them at the right time I can have success.

you can try it, but it dont mean anything if the spores germinate and the myc doesnt get GE at the bottom of the jar. and flipping your jars disrputs your contam barrier of dry verm and can invite the baddies in

I wouldn't flip. I flipped 4 jars a few months ago and 2 of them got trich. Not goods odds. Just wait it out and see what happens. Your jars will probably end up fine.

yes maybe, but wouldnt you rather just know your jars were going to be fine and not have the possibility of stalling.

and 1/2 pint shorties colonize faster too

they definitely do colonize faster, but if I had already made and inoculated jars, I wouldn't just throw them away. Its not like the substrate is reusable.

Yeah I know what you mean. This grow is going to be a very experimental one, I can already tell. It is what it is though, I'm gonna try my best and if it doesn't work out I'll try something else. Could you explain to me how the bottom wouldn't get GE though?

its too tall, heres a tip you do use tall pints do not handle them at all because thats how it gets compacted at the bottom.

once you noc em up put them on a shelf and DONT touch them at all until they are 100%.

ive seen them work just gotta baby them

I plan on just leaving them on my (clean) closet shelf during their incubation period. If I can find a way to make a good LC maybe I'll try that, in hopes of faster colonization and less chance of contam/stalling. But no matter what, If my jars stall out/whatnot, I'll just cut out the colonized portion and fruit as is. Better to get some use out of them than no use right?

I only have experience with cakes, thats why I'm trying to banch out with this grow and try casing, maybe LCs etc. Hence when I said this is gonna be an experimental grow.I would try grains, but I dont have a PC.

They are very large and you will get a decent amount from them, however, because of their size they take forever to colonize, consolidate, and fruit. I have a set going right now that is only NOW fruiting over 2 months since I inoculated it (no contam either!).

Unless you can do 3 injections of 2ml LC of some fast stuff, the extra time they take isn't worth it for pftek.
