Any last minute advice? About to birth my cakes
    #18429190 - 06/16/13 06:48 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

My cakes are all 70% finished to go. One of them is maybe 90% ready! but anyways. I have a good size Tupperware container that I'll drill holes in for ventilation, and I'll use water saturated perlite for my humidity. I have a good thermometer and humidity watch. I also just invested in a 6700k lightbulb. (not 6500k I know but oh well...)

Any advice for good fruit batches?

if your building a sgfc do it properly and you won't need the hygrometer and as long as your comfortable in the room there's no need for thermometer either, just keep up with your misting and fanning

Wait til the jars are 100% colonized... ALL OF THEM. Not 70%, not 90%, not 95%, 100%. After they all hit 100%, then wait another 5-7 days for them to consolidate.

Build a proper SGFC, don't cut corners or you won't get optimal results.

I'm going to dunk and roll as well. But if I wait for all the jars to finish colonizing at the same time, will the one that finished first be okay?

And If i'm using perlite do i still have to spray I figured the perlite would keep it moist enough? I do plan on fanning a few times a day though.

Thanks everyone so far:) jars are looking great only 1 possible contam that I'm keeping my eye on. I used 8 different pint jars. so Ill have prolly 7 cakes. I'm making a second batch already with 9 half pint jars:)It's been fun so far, I'm getting into it!

Dunk and roll is a great idea

If one finishes first then it's ok to birth before the rest. I would do it so it doesn't pin inside the jar but that's just personal preference because you could get away with waiting for all of them.

Yes you must absolutely mist on a regular basis. Pinning isn't caused just by humidity, it's caused by evaporation off the surface of the mycelium. That's the whole point of rolling it in verm. The verm retains moisture after the mistings and evaporates causing a nice little microclimate.

As for the possible contam... set that one aside and give it a good sniff. If it smells different from the rest then don't use it.

Sounds like you're doing good, best of luck!

You don't need to birth them all on the exact same day. But you definately SHOULD NOT birth your cakes before they reach 100% colonization.

And, like I said, after they reach 100% colonization, let them CONSOLIDATE inside the jars for 5-7 days BEFORE dunking and rolling and birthing.

I can't make this anymore specific. Don't cut corners, follow the teks or you are going to waste your cakes.
