inoculation/incubation method question
    #18426870 - 06/16/13 09:52 AM (11 years, 6 months ago)

Hey fellow shroomers, I am in the process of starting a new grow and I usually think ahead, its just how I am. But anyways, I see alot of new growers have issues (on top of impatience ) with getting the bottoms of their jars to colonize. The reason is tjat co2 sinks to the bottom of tje jar because it weighs down. So, my question is, wouldnt it just be easier to have your jars upside down,  and elevated, for FAE, in the first place? Because the way I see it the co2 will leak out of the holes causing fresh oxygen to go in. And since they are upside down, it would be harder for contams in the air to travel under the jars, and up into them, rather than lazily floating their way down into the jars from the air above. Just a thought.let me know what you guys think, I love to hear what you guys have to say.

no it's not co2, it's the wrong size jars as pints tend to stall, this happens not because of co2 but gravity drawing moisture to the bottom throwing off the moisture content and also compacting the sub, to avoid this simply get 1/2 pint widemouths(there done twice as fast anyway)
co2 actually follows the heat currents put off by your mycelium and right out your injection holes so it rises and doesn't sink

Yeah I understand. Right now I have pint jars, but I'm confident I can work them by packing the sub loose, adding in extra nutes, etc. I've only ever had to flip my jars once. Now that I think about it a little more, I'm pretty sure the reason why people flip their jars during the end of colonization/when only the bottom is colonized, is because the moisture will be drawn downward like you said, to the dry verm layer causing easy contam. Hahaha, thanks cronicr fastest answer to a question I've ever gotten.

you can adjust the recipe a bit by adding a litle extra verm to lighten it up, just do your verm/water first then add your flour. i've also found ground wbs works better then brf in pints:thumbup:
