how important is fresh air?
    #18427821 - 06/16/13 01:43 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

Hi everyone! Of course I'll start my first post by thanking everyone here for their generosity with their time and info... I have gone from MS-syringe to print successfully with no need to post questions because of you all! But now I am puzzled.

So, I guess my question isn't as simple as the subject line. I know FAE is important when fruiting. But how can monotubs, SGFC, and the outdoor neglect tek work equally well? (note: My outdoor neglect bag is almost closed shut, not waving around in the wind or anything.)

The reason I'm asking is that my SGFC is fruiting more slowly with great RH and FAE than my outdoor neglected spent bulk sub...I threw away my spent bulk tray the same day i put ready cakes in my SGFC and both have tons of pins 7 days later the bag outside that gets so little air exchange just gave me two picture perfect nipple-capped fruits, each about 5 inches tall...

Why'd they grow faster than the cakes in my SGFC? why are they growing at all? Do mushrooms like wind or not?

lastly, has anyone had experience successfully neglecting a SGFC for a few days? I left for 3 days recently and hung wet shop-towels (blue thick paper towels) over the outside of the walls of the SGFC and a fan running in a connected room with the door open and I'm wondering whether it wasnt the most productive three days my SGFC has seen. 1-2 inch youths turned to 8-10 inch monsters while gone. since coming back and resuming my fan/mist schedule my SGFC has basically resumed its normal production routine of about an inch-1.5 inches every two days...

I know comparisons between SGFC's and monotubs have been played out many times on the boards. I've read the discussions, but I havent seemed to be able to reconcile how each FC makes up for conditions it obviously lacks from the other FC's...

TL;DR - How can I be getting comparable results from an outdoor neglect (one hole for FAE), indoor monotub (6 holes), and a SGFC (some hundred-odd holes)?

Did you dunk and roll the cakes?

If your bulk substrate started producing mushrooms again then it wasn't actually spent. There is usually a period where everything stops growing between flushes.

If they were growing the whole time then it's all one flush. It's normal for some to start early in the flush and some to start later.

so there is an actual period of no growth... like nothing? fuuuck!

my last tub was close to a roller coaster as far as growth. i figure each dip then increase was the next "flush".

so a tubs life span can reach past a month?

Fresh air is needed by mushrooms as much as you need it

But I could never survive with the airflow in a garbage bag that's almost sealed entirely...My fruits did fine! this is sort of the heart of my question: Is there any reason I shouldn't just throw my cakes into a garbage bag next time and use the outdoor neglect method all summer? Right now my "spent" (obviously not really spent = thank you kizzle) bulk sub in a garbage bag outside is performing on par or better than my cakes in my SGFC... and my SGFC is performing normally...

Definitely. Just the rest period between flushes for Cubes can last a week or more. That's the best time to soak your substrate so it'll be fully hydrated for the next flush.

my last successful tub was only on its 2nd flush and i didnt dunk. i had harvested everything before i left out of town. everything was cut. i came back 2 days later and there was nothing so i tossed it.

ok-

There seems to be a huge discrepancy between the environment of a garbage bag with a 2 inch hole, the environment of a monotub, and the environment of a SGFC. Am I just not understanding how air works?

the air works differently? uh... doesnt it always work by providing oxygen to the surface of the myc/fruits and/or evaporating water from the surface of the same?

yes but in sgfc's the air comes from undrneathe and around the sub, in a mono it comes in the top holes and is forced out the bottom, the air is obviously always gonna have the same purpose just applied diffrently

I guess my instincts are just off...it seems like they are creating two distinctly different environments. Maybe I'll understand as i get through more grows...
