Hey again guys, I still can't find any jars for a reasonable price. Do you think it'd be worth doing  WBS --> Bulk? How does it compare in difficulty to PF-Tek? I can either spend $45 on canning jars or about $30 on normal jars, WBS and coco coir. So yeah, what should I do? Obviously bulk would give me a greater yield, but the only thing is how hard it is to keep it sterile and such.

One more thing, what volume is one brick of coco coir? They sell it in huge blocks in Australia, as opposed to bricks.

Thanks

1 Brick of coir is equal to 650g dry, and expands to about 8 quarts when hydrated.

The big blocks your talking about are most likely 5kg blocks, meaning 8 or 9 bricks worth compressed together.

Bulk is essentially the same thing as PF-Tek, with just one added step.(spawning)

Yes, I think it would be worth doing.

So what's the best way of doing bulk? Monotub looks pretty solid to me, but if I get a contamination it's a whole heap of substrate and spawn gone. Is casing BRF cakes a good way to bulk grow?

:whathesaid:

Casing crumbled up cakes is not bulk growing.

You would get basically the same yield as fruiting them as cakes.

Spawning to bulk will expand the mycellial network, allowing for more moisture and surface area.

If your cakes are fully colonized, and the substrate is properly pasteurized, there is little risk.

Monotub it is, then. Would I be able to fill a few of these with substrate as little monotubs and then put them in my FC? My intended FC is huge so putting substrate directly inside would be really inefficient.

Your intended FC should be a monotub.

You could use trays in a SGFC(Shotgun Fruiting Chamber), but then you lose the best aspect of a monotub, "set and forget".

In a SGFC you would have to manually mist/fan it out multiple times a day.

In a monotub you Dial It In, set a fan on oscillate in the room, and forget about it.

Alright, looks good. So basically my process is going to be this:

  • Prepare WBS jars and sterilize
  • inoculate jars and incubate, shake regularly
  • Prepare monotub with garbage bag/holes/polyfill/etc
  • Prepare bulk substrate of verm/coco coir(?)
  • Spawn WBS into substrate inside monotub
  • Wait until colonized
  • Initiate fruiting

Correct? Sorry for all the questions, I just really want to get this right haha.

You do not shake the jars regularly, just shake them once, when they are like 20-30%.

The tub will have tape covering all the holes when you spawn the tub.

The polyfill is only needed when you put it in fruiting conditions.

Oh, and where do the holes go on the monotub?

No, non breathable tape.

I use clear packing tape, but duck tape works as well.

Usually 2 on each long side at substrate level, and 1 on each short side, top center.

Would a USB powered computer fan suffice as a fan for a monotub?
