Has anyone here successfully fruited these? I've never grown wood lovers before so don't really know what to expect except difficulties with fruiting.

I've been thinking about making some spawn on rye but I'm fairly sure I've left it too late for outdoor fruiting this year. Note: I live in England, which is zone 8. I don't need a massive yield though, just a few grams would be worth it. Has anyone got any tips or ideas to help me successfully grow some before autumn-winter 2014?

Has anyone tried using soil warming cables in a mushroom bed? I have a set with a thermostat that goes from 0-40°C so it might be worth experimenting.

Also, has anyone tried using the kind of hardwood chips sold for chicken runs. Alder chips aren't cheap locally - I can get 70l of hard wood chips from a friend that keeps chickens for <£5 more than 500g of alder chips. I think she gets them from https://www.hensforpets.co.uk/products/chicken-coop-cleaning-chicken-run-woodchips/chicken-run-wood-chips

I just used wood mulch and wood pellets designed for wood furnaces. it colonized nicely, still need to stick it outside
