COMPARING MY 2 TUBS MADE 10 DAYS APART (PICS)
    #18423695 - 06/15/13 03:12 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

I made a tub on 5/31 using a brick of coir, 2 quarts vermiculite, 4.5 q of water, and ~8 quarts of rye spawn (i dunked the grainu for 15 mins before adding to substrate) inoculated w LC ecuador (note: i bought the syringe a year before i used it to make LC). i didn't notice the rye colonizing slowly, but i have been waiting longer than usual for the tub to be at 100%. it is almost there:

it is possible i didn't mix the substrate well enough, and there are tight patches of coir that the mycelium is trying to eat thru. regardless, i am becoming increasingly impatient.

on either 6/9 or 6/10, i made another tub with the same recipe, except i didn't dunk the grains and used rye inoculated with cambodian LC (the syringe was purchased just recently).  because of the discouragement i experienced with the other tub, i decided to open this tub to see if maybe the conditions are the reason for the slow growth. i open it to find this:

i was very happy to find that this tub, altho it was made 10 days after the first one, is even closer to 100% than the first tub!

is the simple explanation that the syringe is a year old? is that time irrelevant and maybe it was just a weak syringe? i have been reading that most people have used ecuador syringes very successfully so i doubt it is the strain itself, but idk... i am just relieved that the speed of the first tub is an isolated incident and i won't have to go thru the wait again!

i would appreciate any comments or estimates on how much longer the second tub has to go

If your LC is ms then I would just chalk it up to different genetics. A comparison like this will not give you very conclusive results unless using a monoculture.

:2cents:

yeah i guess so. i have been making pf cakes for the past couple of months while waiting for the rye grain to be ready and there is  a very noticeable yield difference between the two strains. i just learned about the isolation concept and am going to try it. i have never used agar before but bought all of the ingredients so i am going to start there and then try to clone the fastest and fattest monster that comes

Well, if you have been opening that first tub up a bunch, that could be why. You want the co2 levels to get high, so you shouldn't open the tub  AT ALL until it is fully colonized and you are ready to fruit it.

i waited 9 days to open the first tub. that has nothing to do with it.

:orry:

That could have a lot to do with it. You can stall out an incomplete tub by prematurely opening it, so don't do that. Make a window in your tub to monitor it's progress. This is second grade stuff.

And like the other person stated, it could have a lot to do with genetics, or using MS. First off, you are using 2 different strains... some colonize faster than others, AND you are using multispore which is a crapshoot.

my window is always covered in condensation by this point. i don't understand how anyone is able to see the progress of their tub unless they have a clear tub.

Genetics, temperature fluctuations, water content.

My guess is water content.  Since you dunked the grains in the first tub, there's a chance you didn't strain them well enough, and the excess water added to the mixture is slowing down colonization.  Kind of like if your water content is off while noc'ing jars, the mycelium grows much slower.  Try 4 quarts next time

that makes alot of sense. i was following this thread: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/17616982

i should pay more attention to the water content, tho, because the first tub is much more moist than the other.

Really both of those tubs look well colonized to me anyway. Lots of times with coir subs the sub will not turn super white anyway, I have learned that sometimes the mycellium will just weakly colonize the coir, giving it a greyish look. It should still be considered colonized and will thicken up over the course of being in fruiting and after the first flush.

Your pics are not the best but it looks like you got knots forming. If those were my tubs I would fruit them now.
