Recommend a VPN for true privacy
    #18423790 - 06/15/13 03:29 PM (10 years, 10 months ago)

Right folks, I've recently canceled my subscription with SlickVPN and fancy a change. My two main concerns with SlickVPN was that I felt at $15, it was just too damn costly, and secondly, I was never able to add a Windows VPN connection. Instead I would have to resort to installing their own software which I was never keen on doing.

So anyway, with all that being said, I'm now interested in signing up to a reliable and speedy VPN provider. From what I've heard, mullvad is meant to be very good. Another plus point is that they accept bitcoins. I've yet to get into bitcoins but I think it would be really beneficial for true anonymity. Has anyone dealt with mullvad before? Secondly, is bitcoins my best option if I'm wanting to protect my privacy all together?

I look forward to your responses.

After considering their various payment options, I think I might chance my luck and send them cash out in the mail.

The details are as follows: https://www.mullvad.net/en/cash.php?id=403041695527

Has anyone paid this way? Do you think it's worth the gamble?

Against what are you defending with the VPN?

I bounce all my web traffic through a third party host with ssh -D

I don't do it for privacy though, I do it because the DNS is screwed up at my ISP.

But it's pretty cool - it forwards all my browser traffic through a tunnel that has military grade encryption.  The encryption overhead is extremely small and not noticeable to me.

It's really easy to set up and works well with linux and windows and mac.  The only thing is that you need a shell account.

If you have root access on the box with the shell account you can modify the logs so if you ever piss off the feds so bad that they raid your shell provider, the logs say that it was someone else or don't exist.

When I change the logs I usually just sed one IP address to another.  That way it looks like the logs exist and have the persons real IP, but it's wrong.  Just wiping the log entries is too obvious.  Sed works well on both text and binary log formats.

Damn that sounds like an awesome idea! I'm going to need to try get some more information from you man. For me, privacy is an all time goal so if I can get even remotely close to being anonymous, I'd be happy!

It's really easy.  You run "ssh -D 3128 remote.host.com", and then login.  Once you authenticate you will have a socks proxy on localhost port 3128 that forwards the traffic over the tunnel and out using the remote hosts IP address.  Set your web browser to use the SOCKS proxy 127.0.0.1 port 3128, and hit whatismyip.com to make sure that your traffic is really goung through the tunnel.

If the ssh dies, you'll need to reauthenticate before you can browse.

After paying for Mullvad via Cash In Mail, I'm now up and running. So far, the service seems to be really good. I've yet to test any downloads but for daily browsing, I've not encountered any issues as of yet.

Happy days!

Mullvad is good, however the true strength of your VPN depends on what you are trying to protect yourself against. If you are hacking, a VPN doesn't really do much good against big brother, simply because they can wiretap the VPN servers, thus revealing your IP address.

Proper anonymity requires more than just a VPN;  You need to properly lockdown your machine, lock down the browser you are using, make sure you block web trackers, web beacons, and prevent your browser from writing to cache, and keeping a history of the websites you visit. Don't do anything that personally identifies you with your VPN. Always make sure you change the MAC address of your NIC, and your router.

But to be honest, if you want any shred of anonymity, don't use your own internet connection.

No they suck, they keep logs of everything you do.
Me thinks you didn't read their TOS, Privacy Statement, or FAQ.

There is no way you go through all this just for regular web traffic. :hatsoff:
