Question about bulk substrate
    #18423601 - 06/15/13 02:47 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

I have a few successful grows using the PF TEK and I really want to try growing with bulk substrate. I have access to a mixture of sawdust and horse manure that has been composting for a year or so. Would this work well as a bulk substrate and if so what's the best way to pasteurize it?

i would do coir/verm/gypsum(optional) first. until you get the hang of pastuerization etc. then move on to hpoo

hpoo is just as easy to pasteurize as coir; you don't need to start with coir when switch to bulk sub.

A lot of people do because it isn't as messy or smelly and it can be easily obtained for cheap.

But you do need to use the search function and read some teks to answer your questions because nobody is gonna hold your hand and teach you.

If the sawdust is cedar, the cedar has anti-fungal agents in it.
Pasteruizing techniques can be found in an online video at mushroomvideos.com by Roger Rabbit.  It's easy to do and hpoo has the best reputation, well cow poo has a good reputation too.

composted manure? im not sure thats really what you want. Though i could be wrong.

I collect fresh manure that has been dried out in the sun, so its probably only a few days old.

Anyway, pasturising is pretty easy..

its well documented on the forums.

Thanks for your input. I still have a couple weeks to figure this out. Guess I'll go talk to a couple horse farmers and see if they'll let me shovel up some poo from the field for my "tomatoes"

This is a really popular tek that people use for cubensis. You can add some gypsum to it too but it's not required.

I stuck some off cuts from giprock  in the blender for my gypsum, failing that you could always donate part of your wall to your gypsum supply  :lolsy:

but yeah its not essential.

Whatever it takes. If the wall must be sacrificed then so be it.

You can save yourself a lot of hassle and buy some from a gardening store. It should come powdered in bags. It's used in gardening as a clay breaker.

50lbs of pelitalized gypsum is under 5 bucks at menards...  A lot cheaper than having to replace your drywall because you punched holes in it.  (Though not nearly as fun)
