How does this look?
    #18404056 - 06/11/13 04:29 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

EDIT AT BOTTOM

I posted over in the contam forum about some green mold that had gotten into my inoculated jars. Long story short, I threw those contaminated ones out, and ended up birthing the jars that appeared to be fine. After dunking and rolling, I now have them in a fruiting chamber, where they have been for a couple days. I'm afraid those are somehow going to get contaminated now. I have a pic of one of the cakes. Though I have researched to the end of creation, this is the first time I'm growing, so I'm a little paranoid. There are little lumps on the top edge of this cake at the "12 o'clock" and "3 o'clock" positions (ish). What is that? Is it pins? Is it just the mycelium growing? Is it bad? Also, how does it look. Most of them look similar to the one shown in the picture.

EDIT: Today I noticed a lot of fluffy white mycelium (?). I'm supposing this is what it is, but not 100% sure. I've tried searching the forum to limit my asking questions. I've found pictures of things that I think look like this, but then I also find pictures of completely different things that kind of look like this to me.

A lot of my cakes have this. It's a fluffy white growing around the edges of the top of the cake. It seems to be just mycelium. I just want some clarification on what this is. If it is mycelium, that's a good sign right, or no?

And I know this is going to be pretty near impossible to say, but if you had to shove out your best guess as to how long until they should pin, what would you say? I let them stay in the jar for a week after full colonization before birthing, dunking, and rolling. By the way, I have GT and EQ, if that would be helpful at all.

So here's some pictures of said "fluffy white" substance on different cakes...

just the mycelium growing, i would take it off whatever you have it sitting on and just wrap a jar ring in foil for them, that looks like a breeding ground and it's probly stopping alot of air movement. GL!

Really? I was thinking that it might effect the air flow or something, so  I was considering taking that out and using the lids. Didn't even think about that causing more contam. Will do.

I'm a little too new to say weather it looks good or bad, but I remember reading that aerial mycelium, which is the white stuff on the top of the cakes is a sign of too much co2.  Or to put another way, it shows a lack of oxygen, from lack of air exchange.  I heard that you cannot have too much air exchange as long as the humidity remains high.

Is that a shotgun fruiting chamber?  How far apart are the holes spaced and what size are they?  Is the chamber raised up 2 inches off the surface of the ground?  If it's not raised up it will hamper FAE.

How often are you fanning and for how long?  Is there any airflow in the room you are in?  I would increase fanning times/day and watch the humidity.

It is a shotgun fc. The holes were drilled 2 inches apart with 1/4 inch drill bit. I have the tubs sitting on solo cups (4, one under each corner). There are holes on all sides except for the lid which has a giant window cut and covered with saran wrap that's taped on.

I am currently misting with water then fanning about 3-4 times daily. Depending on if I have to work that day or not.

The circulation isnt great. I have no central ac or heat. And they are kept in a closed off room. That is really the only place I can keep them. It is also a designated "smoke room" and I try to stay on the other side of the room while smoking buds but I've heard mixed reviews about the effects on the shrooms after searching the forums. I don't know if that would have anything to do with it or not.

no worries man those look good....if your an everyday close up looker watch out for the little flat topped white spots thats tric, just not sporulated yet thats when it turns green and before this is best time to get rid lol, have a deeper look into the contam sections and youll get it, this one should do what you want tho, the reason for this is your pic 1 in the row of 4, caught my eye then i realized its the verm flashing lol.. have fun bro!

I would say off-hand that you need to drill holes in the lid as described in the sgfc tek.  Is there a compelling reason not to?
If you don't figure this FAE out soon, the mushrooms tend to grow long and skinny, and might break under their own weight and or under-perform their potential.  If you can crack a window or something to get a small amount of fresh air into that room I think that would help, smoking uses up the oxygen in the room.

The reason I didn't drill holes in the lid was just because of the window situation with the saran wrap. There's not too many places I can drill them but there's about two inches of plastic left around the window so I could try drilling there.

They are in front of a window that I can open. Usually I just turn on the ceiling fan while smoking. Its so hot outside here lately, I didn't want it getting too hot, as I don't have ac in that room.

Well, use your judgement, but I messed up a sgfc by accidentally not elevating it a full 2 inches and it resulted in too much co2 in the chamber.  The few minutes it takes to straighten out the FAE may make a big difference.  I would do whatever it takes to follow the sgfc tek even if it meant getting a new lid.  I know that's a pain but, I feel it's important.

good luck.

I've been thinking of making new lids ever since I saw this post. I have extras laying around that I can steal from other tubs with junk in them. I'm most likely going to end up doing that. Thanks for your help.

Shouldnt have fans blowing in the room, at the most a cracked window.

Oh, thanks. I did not think it would hurt it just being on for 30 min or so a few times a day. I will stop doing that.

It will throw off the humidity in your fc, sgfc is designed to work on natural air currents flowing up through the moist perlite.  Dont forget misting and fanning
