Humidifiers
    #1819472 - 08/16/03 10:19 AM (20 years, 7 months ago)

Hey what's up.

I just purchased an ultra sonic humidifier, and I have a few questions about it's operation. How can I sterilize it when it comes time to use it? It will melt if i put boiling water in it. Plus it has about 20 hours of use per filling of the tank, so if im constantly replacing the water I won't be constantly sterilizing it.

If i just boil water, let it cool, and then put it into the tank, will that be sufficient? Maybe I should get an ultraviolet fluorescent light on it, i've read that kills bacteria.

you don't need to worry about contamination if the cakes are fully colonized...p. cubensis is pretty good at protecting itself up until after the 2nd flush...it's good to stay on guard though...

I disagree about the contamination - I would still use 9:1 water/H2O2 in the humidifier water. My friend would only get contam on his cakes after the first or second flush, there is no way to know for sure whether it was his fault or brought in by the humidifier, but why take the risk?

If your cakes are fully colonized, the humidifier won't hurt them until after they've been flushed several times and are weak. If you are familiar with ciruitry, you can wire a bunch of 5,000 or 10,000 ohm resistors with the potentiometer, the slide bar that adjusts mist output, and you will significantly decrease mist output. I now only use one condensing bottle and my humidifier is supply moisture to two large chambers. A full tank of water lasts me about a week. It's a very easy way to make some of those ultrasonic humidifier headaches go away.
