I am still reading, reading, reading and reading old outdoor post but can't seem to find a post that addresses bug prevention
Does anyone know a good outdoor post I could read that takes action against bugs for outdoor beds OR just know a few good tips on how to keep the bugs off of my fruits?
Thanks,

I heard salt and beer will stop the slugs. I'm more scared about other bugs. I have been reading about diatomaceous but not really sure how to apply it on my bed. Is this something you put on the ground first or do you sprinkle it over the bed once colonized?
Thanks

Diatomaceous earth and copper also work.
I use Sluggo pellets. Just an iron salt. Good stuff. A tad dear.
Good luck,

That's so awful for your soil...
OP, line your grow with copper tubing. I don't remember who mentioned that but it is genius.
Use reemay to cover the grow too.

thanks, how do you apply this diatomaceous? Do you mix it in or just sprinkle on top of the entire bed? Will it hurt the fungi at all?

It will not hurt the fungi, or anything but crawling insects.
You just scatter is around. (full disclosure: I have only used it in my smart pots for my indoor plants...outside I use Sluggo)
While it is a tad expensive, Sluggo pellets are just Iron Phosphate and are zero danger to you, pets, or the environment.
One thing: do *not* use diatomaceous earth intended for use with swimming pools. It is treated in such a way that leaves it toxic. (free Silica being cancerous, or some such)

Thanks for the tip! I'm just going to buy the diatomaceous and sprinkle it on top of my bed after the bed is colonized and cover with a clear plastic tarp with holes poked in it. I think that should work well. I just have to make sure the bed keeps moist.

I pretty much ignore the bugs these days. They don't eat much. I get more damage from squirrels and turtles and deer than bugs.
A ring of copper tubing from the hardware store will stop slugs. They won't crawl over copper. RR

I got a bag of food grade pet friendly DE, so it say's on the bag anyways , lol. I don't trust it but I will have a mask and gloves on so I'm sure things will be ok. Thanks for the tip.

I dug out a very nice spot, in a corner of 2 walls. With the DE, clear tarp and chicken wire, I'm thinking it should go well. It kinda looks like a prison for mushrooms. I'm using tent stakes to secure the tarp down in effort to fend of the critters and such. The area I am using has no slugs to be know. We will have to wait and see I guess.

That is what the tarp is for besides making it humid. I can't picture birds dive bombing threw a tarp but then again, nature is unknown and holds lots of surprises!

My latest bonsai G luteofolius were eaten by these mini flea like bugs that wouldn't let the pins develop. Slugs are easy compared to them because you can atleast see the damb things!!
