Outdoor Laundry Basket : humidity and bugs
    #18417594 - 06/14/13 06:02 AM (11 years, 7 months ago)

Ok this is very exciting.  I've got 2 laundry baskets of pasteurized straw fully colonized with P. Cubensis wheat berry spawn.

Now what?

If I put them outside, which is the only option I have, does anyone have problems with bugs? Secondly, how do I maintain the level of humidity required for a bountiful harvest?

My solution has been to make a shotgun fruiting chamber out of an old meat freezer.  I will cut large holes for air exchange, use a glass window for a lid and run a vicks humidifier at night for humidity.

Its been a while since i looked at straw logs and laundry basket methods, but from what i remember is that having high humidity was less of a concern as you want plenty of fae and you just make up for lower humidity with misting.

Though they might be needed to kept in a room right slightly higher ambient RH idk.

Not all strains will push only through the holes.  In fact, most strains will end up pinning between the holes and be deformed.  If you have a good strain that only pins through holes in the plastic, take care of it.

I've found that putting the basket in a larger tub or even a plastic trash bag during colonization works best.  If you use a plastic bag, just leave the end open, but folded over so some gas exchange can occur.  Laundry baskets work best in the spring and fall rainy seasons, or to simulate that, you can turn on a sprinkler several times per day for a few minutes.  If you have an area outdoors that has heavy vegetation, put the laundry basket there and the plants will provide humidity.

Put the laundry basket under some bushes so it's mostly in the shade but with dappled sunlight, while surrounded by plants which give off humidity as they transpire.  Run a lawn sprinkler over the whole area for an hour or so daily, or more often if it's really hot and sunny.

Don't worry about bugs.  They're a fact of outdoor growing and don't eat much anyway.

Maybe where you are, this is true, but anything I've ever tried to do outdoors has been RUINED by slugs and bugs.

Just want to say thanks to everyone that posted.

I found a place for the baskets in some tall grass next to a swamp. They have colonized beautifully and are white as snow!  The sunlight is dappled and there is lots of rain and humidity in the forecast (15-25 degrees centigrade).  Lucky for me, this has been the trend so far. The bug net I've wrapped the baskets in may keep out the larger slugs and gnats.

What about rain though?  What if we get too much?

I haven't had slugs, but fire ants have been my issue. I have thought about hanging baskets from the tree that shades my beds.
Looking forward to seeing some pics.
