Take a look at these tubs and tell me what you think
    #18416481 - 06/13/13 10:37 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

Friend of mine has these tubs and was wondering if they looked like there was too much condensation on the walls of the tub and if that was due to too much moisture in the substrate.  Also, on the clear tub with the blue latch the lid bows up on the edges so there is a bit o airflo as you can see in the picture from the dry area in the corner(second to last pic).  Also, me and him were both thinking about using easy felt over the holes for FAE but I have been told its hard to dial in.  I am using 6 2in holes, 4 at sub level on the long side and 2 up high on the short ends.  was thinking about addin a high hole on the long sides and maybe going with easy felt on the bottom and polyfil on the top (or possibly closer to the middle).  Good?  Bad?  Thoughts?  Suggestions?. :thanx:

it's fine, judge it only during fruiting

I don't think there should be that much condensation. can't be too big of a problem. especially since it doesn't look like its fruiting.

Is that too much H20 in the sub?  And no he's not fruiting, and they are not mine, I had 5 contaminate recently due to the ac freezing when I went out of town and it got really hot and I thought I was supposed to put them in trash bags sealed up but thankfully the room the jars were in had a window unit so all 50 some odd are ok.  I was gonna start some next week maybe and use the same tek he is, its coir/verm/gypsum.  Also, he soaked the grains for like 20 min and let them drain for a good while, but still they came out fairly wet.  Should soaking be avoided with rye berries and obviously this could add too much moisture?

Also the room temp is in the low 70s, could this be the cause for the condensation with the high moisture on the rgains?  He says his coir was on the dryer side of field ready.  Used 4 quarts water to 1 brick of coir and 3 quarts of verm with a huge handful of gypsum (dude has banana fingers so it had to be like 2 cups).

it's just warm in your tub from the heat your myc puts off, if you used a liner the water will just pool up underneath and you can just dump it out after your first flush with your dunk water

Usually if your substrate is too wet, it won't colonize properly. I run everything I do towards the drier end of the spectrum. Other than that, don't worry about condensation.  Wiping the walls with a napkin is optional. I usually clean the underside of the lids with a bleach rag once in a while. Still water is the friend of bacteria. Especially in summer. Its up to you though what you prefer

It's completely normal, and expected, because of the temperature differential from the heat the mycellium generates.

Dunking fully colonized grains before spawning has benefits, and not really any downsides.

It does not have to be avoided, but it is not really necessary.

There should always be condensation in a monotub.

Allright thanks guys, these were done on monday, so I am guessing next weeken to early the next week or so would be a good time frame projection?  10 days to fully colonize?  Or is it 7,then case and introduce fruiting conditions?  We have seen so many variations we are a little confused.  Also, on the subject of casing, would peeps recommend casing or not casing and why?  Was thinking about going with the 50/50+, peat/verm with oyster shells and hydrated lime (maybe the lime, readins say its easy to mess up).

The microclimate in your tub should be good as-is.  I would personally leave uncased.
Fruit it when its done colonizing (fully white).
Some set & forget. For flush 1 I usually prefer heavy fanning after slight misting for killer pinsets. Again, this too is all personal preference.

I do feel strongly about fruiting as soon as it's colonized as opposed to waiting beyond that, as well as not casing tubs.

I edited the first post, but if you miss it I/we are thinking baout using poyfil on the top holes and easy felt on the bottom holes or maybe easy felt all around.  I know its hard to dial in, but I am thinking the polyfil LOOSE in the top holes with the EF on the bottom 4 (2 top holes on short ends, 4 at sub lvl on long sides, all 2"). Anyone have any experience with ezfelt and if so any advice?  I have had such good luck with it on jars I am looking at using it for tubs as polyfil is kinda a pain in the ass IMO.

Ok, so you mean after colonization & we open up the holes with feltor poly, spray the WALLS or the sub itself?  I have read you want no water on the substrate itself, so I am guessing mist the walls?

And yeah we used a liner, there is not much pooling up but its only been a few days.  That was my thought about the heat differential, but also had read stuff about condensation is bad.  On the tubs with clear lids there is a small amount on the lids and no drops are forming YET.  Drops onto the sub are bad, right?

Edit: don't mist the walls.

I don't advocate misting/fanning per se. It's just what I do. I know how pinning works and why, and I put it to use for power pinsets. Before flush one starts you want to be careful about spraying delicate primordia forcefully. I hydrate the sub surface and fan until it evaporates.
So, yes, standing water in general is best avoided for various reasons.

With the particular penis varieties I work with, they tend to have bald spots with the "set & forget" method so I intervene for better  performance.
The "set & forget" is probably best for a beginner.

I've never used felt on a tub but it may not give enough fresh air. With a grain jar and felt its gas exchange that's happening. Not the same as fresh air. Poly gives good airflow while keeping humidity up and contaminant spores out. Its not a real pain in the ass. Just set it in there loosely.

Fruit when it is fully 100% colonized, there is no set timeframe, it will happen when it happens.

No need to case cubes in a monotub.

Monotubs should be set and forget, no need to mist or fan when the holes are stuffed right.
