Can someone explain, in laymen's terms, how shrooms work?
    #1825786 - 08/18/03 11:14 AM (20 years, 7 months ago)

I know I know... check erowid. Use the fuking search engine. Read the FAQ's. I have done that and the documents have either been way too complex ("A drug, acting as an electron donor, may compete with a natural substance for its acceptor interfering thus with the normal course of electron transmission, this drug though itself a donor, may produce an effect which corresponds to the inhibition of electron donation") or too simple "it tickles a part of you brain and you see things"). I want to know why a tryptamine, very related to serotonin, makes the trip happen? Does it become your primary neurotransmitter for the time being? Does it block serotonin? Fill up the receptor so the message is lost along the way? What's the deal, this stuff interests the hell out of me. And how do electrical impulses and slighty molecular differences on indole rings carry 'self transforming elf machinery' and the like?? Why can I only remember my trips well when I'm tripping? Does the brain store the information using the tryptamine as a neurotransmitter, therefore its difficult to access the information with the normal chemicals? Anyone got some good links that I will understand without a degree in neuroscience, but will ease my burning curiosity as well? I'm reading "The Invisible Landscape" by Terence McKenna but its really out of date, I think it came out in the early 70's, and I'd like to see what we have found in the last 30 years about how tryptamines work.

In a nutshell, this is basically what it does.

In very simple terms...

The brain is made up of zillions of neurons (brain cells). Each neuron is 'connected' to thousands of other neurons. The neurons take input from all of their neighboring neurons, and if the input is enough they 'fire' sending an output to all of their neighboring neurons. This process leads to thought, cognition, etc... (Very simplified)

There is space between the neurons. When you take a drug, the drug gets into the spaces between the neurons and alters how/when the neuron fires. (Very simplified)

The neurons have receptors, which are a lot like a keyhole. Think of a drug as a key. The drug usually only effects a neuron if it fits into one of the neurons receptors.

> want to know why a tryptamine, very related to serotonin

Tryptamine has a shape very similiar to serotonin. Because of this, it will fit into the same 'keyhole' that serotonin fits into... but because the tryptamine shape is a bit different, the effects are different.

(Before the experts flame this, I know I have overyly simplified things... buy he asked for it in Laymens terms...)

I'm an undergrad at a large university, what class should I take to give me a good background knowledge to delve into this stuff further?

If that's true, that can be the explanation of shroomz healing people from depression caused by intense drug usage... Since ones brain can store a certain amount of serotonin and needs some time to recover when you spend all the storage at once, tryptamines stimulating the serotonin receptors without wasting any serotonin makes you feel good without any serotonin broken.... If i'm not wrong, once the serotonin is excreted into synaps, most of it is perceived by the receptors. The other serotonin molecules are broken and can not be used again. One of the causes of depression is using the serotonin storage so often (not letting it to retrieve) and the receptors getting useless of over-stimulation.... (for ex. people using extacy often) Is this acceptable as a (very) basic explanation????  :oogle:

Theres really not enough known about the brain and how it works to determine exactly what psilocin does to it.

We need to learn more about conciousness itself before we can say 'in lamens terms' what it does to you.

Thats part of the reason myself and others do this tryptamine. We want to know what it does/changes/affects to make us feel the way they do. Thats half(and only half) of the fun of tryptamines:)

Since we barely even know anything about conciousness, ie: why that is that, why we see the way we do, why happy and sad are opposites, why you is you and me is me, why is is, why why is, we dont know now. We dont even know *why* we have a conciousness let alone what things do to it... Its silly really, we should be looking to find out why were here instead of going to college to better engineer an SUV, right?

Yes. These are not mutually exclusive: Serotonin is a tryptamine. Serotonin is similar to tryptamine. They are both correct.

The obvious analogy here is with the popular phenethylamines. Mescaline is a phenethylamine simply because it containes the phenethylamine moiety. Mescaline is also similar to phenethylamine.

However mescaline is also an indole. Figure that one out.

Kratom is a narcotic similar to opiates yet at the same time has the stimulating effects of Cocaine. Figure that out.
