they aren't called disposable for nothing... i know they're cheap but it still pains me to throw away petri dishes. i've been working on isolating a few mono cultures so i've been using a LOT of dishes lately.
i wanted to see what happened after i washed and wiped with alcohol and repoured them.
so one night i poured 60 total dishes with homemade PDA. 10 were recycled, 50 were new out of the sleeve. after pouring i re-covered them with the sleeves and let sit for 2 days before innoculating them with various agar cultures.

all 10 of the recycled dishes had the same fan shaped orangish bacteria. all from the same pour and from 5 different cultures (each dish with 3 samples of same culture.) none of the other 50 are contaminated. all the bacteria popped up at the same time, night 3.
it's some cool looking bacteria for sure but no use to me.
just thought i'd share.

alcohol wont sterilise. It will kills some bacteria but others will survive and start to grow once hydrated again.
Thats why its used as a sanitiser and not to sterilise anything. Another reason why we say so many times that yoiu should not wipe a needle or tool after flame sterilising.
Plastic petris are cheap but i too agree id hate to just through them away. Im not confident how much of general waste is actually filtered and recycable plastics taken out, and we dont have seperate recycle bins except for bottles.
Glass petri dishes are damn expensive though, id spend probably a good 100 quid on glass dishes and would still need for if i was working with more than just a couple of cultures.
there must be plastic petris that can survive pressure cooking,
