MY First Grow Via BRF in SG-FC using PC Z+ STRAIN
    #18408109 - 06/12/13 11:53 AM (11 years, 7 months ago)

So this is my first grow ever. This being said i am ready for constructive criticism. Any other kind of fuckery is not welcomed.  I am currently as the top stated using a SG-FC but i have no idea what my humidity is and i will not go but some piece of crap or overly expensive hydrometer.  They do not work most always don't make it too 100% accurately.  I used a mixture of water crystals and perlite on the bottom layer of perlite water crystals then perlite 5" total in thickness with holes drilled every 2".  I am not getting any real moisture build up on sides or top but now have pins on the bottom so i added more verm to the top where there were no pins and flipped.  Is this because it stays more moist on the bottom via the small pile of verm i have each one of them on or is it from the constant overhead and side light it gets from the sun when i leave the FC sitting by the patio window.  I now have the SG-FC contained to a closet where i have a fan running in the window of the room as well as a small fan running in the closet constantly and i mist somewhere around 2-3 times a day the overhead light is a 6500 k light that i run 14 hours a day right now.  Please help a fungi out.

don't flip your cakes, just keep up with your misting/fanning.
as soon as you mist you have 99% humidity on the surface of your cakes where it matters most so no need for a hygrometer, just keep an eye on the moisture on the surface and mist when necesary

The fan in the closet is probably not ideal for the SGFC. I believe the SGFC is designed for natural air circulation which might be disrupted by the fan. The closet is probably not the best idea either, but sometimes can't be avoided.

THe SGFC is siting on a dresser in a large sliding door closet that is always open in a room where there is a fan almost constantly in the window on exhaust mode sucking fresh air from the patio through the house and in and out of the room so air exchange is often to always.  i will stop fanning with the small fan and allow just the air movements in the room to do my drying and evaporating.  Here's some pictures.

Looks good!

Just make sure the SGFC is not directly ON the dresser, but elevated enough for airflow through the bottom holes - I know it's obvious, but just making sure...

Hope your grow is successful. I have about a 1 1/2 weeks until I start fruiting my first grow as well - exciting!

sounds like your good there brother. don't worry about what the RH is just keep the surface of the cakes wet and give them some fresh air once in a while and you'll be great. good shit

So i was looking over my cakes with a usb microscope and found there are so many pins on what once was the bottom of these cakes. Maybe 60 all together!  What made the difference? The bottoms <now the tops> had a much thicker layer of verm than the tops    < now bottoms > as well as the sides are lacking due to the "rolled verm" coming off during misting/drying just fell off.  So before i flipped them i added a little more to the tops < now bottoms > hoping that would induce growth.  Should i add Hydrogen Peroxide to my misting water and if so at what PP?

Why would you use hydrogen peroxide. AFAIK, only use H2O2 for fighting cobweb mold. The H2O2 will hurt the mycelium, it will survive but it is widely accepted as not good for growth.

i was under the impression that a very small amount of h202 mixed with misting bottle water keeps the nasties from forming in your water as well as your FC

No.  It has the opposite effect by weakening the mushroom mycelium, making it more susceptible to the contamination.  Never use peroxide as a matter of course.  Only use it for specific Dactylium infections on cased substrates.

Here is some new pics keep ya watching day to day.  I was wondering if i am misting enough.  I just realized today i haven't hydrated the perlite for a while.  So i took a gallon of water and started dumping it in the SGFC and it took a half gallon and i quit cause it was dripping a little.  But the pink bottle it what i use for misting 2-3 times a day.  I usually mist the whole bottle out.  Is that too much cause it seems to suck it up rather well no standing water after 10 minutes or so.  But enjoy the pictures and please comment and give me any advice you have.  Thanks --<>03

Im also new so take with a grain of salt.

Scoop the perlite into a strainer and rinse it in the sink to re-hydrate. Pouring a bunch in can cause it to puddle up in areas and increase contamination risk. As for using a whole bottle to mist, more info would probably give you a better answer. Without a reference to the size of the bottle and how large your chamber is I dont see a way to answer that. By the sounds of it, your cakes are thirsty

The bottle holds somewhere around 12 oz of water and i go through that in a day.  I have not been running the fan anymore via RR comment.  My FC is about 16"d x 12"w but i specially picked this container for its bottom that scoops down where there are holes every 2".  I have no cracking or any  odd issues except for a bit of a yellow/brownish rusty color i do believe is from the water i was first using.  Now i am only using bottled.

Here are some new pictures of the day!  The top three are from the morning and the others are from later this evening.  Was wondering when to tell when they are ready to pick.  These ones have there veils breaking but this strain is supposed to get large fruits.

now here's the thing some say that you have to cut them before the vail breaks...others say let em get big and then do it.  Which one is the right way.  I would like some input into this via some of the more reputable mycologistskindapeople.  The potency is only effected as i have came to understand is in the strain and the amount of nutes it takes in and growing conditions as well.  But if i leave them grow will they just die or how long will they fruit?

pick just as or before the veil breaks and after the veil breaks if you want prints. and what you may believe is "growth" is really just cellular enlargement

Mushrooms develop differently than plants or animals do. Plants and animals grow through cell division - to get bigger they have to produce more cells. Cell division is relatively slow and requires a lot of energy. The mushroom body(mycelium) also grows by cell division. However, the mushroom fruit does not grow by cell division. Just about as soon as it starts to develop, a mushroom has almost the same number of cells that the mature mushroom will have. The mushroom increases in size through cell ENLARGEMENT! This means that the cells can balloon up very rapidly. Very little energy is required, basically the cells just enlarge with water. So a mushroom can increase in size as fast as water can be pumped into its cells. Almost overnight a mushroom can go from a pin head to a large mushroom.

pick before the veil tares oh and....
Yes, a massive spore drop will affect future flushes.  They'll be mediocre if at all.  Once mushrooms mature to the point of dropping all their spores, the mycelium is signaled to enter die-back mode and stop producing.

We recommend to pick at veil tear as a sign that all growers can recognize.  However, there's nothing about the act of the veil tearing which reduces potency.  There is however solid proof that when spores drop, the entire mycelium(not just the individual mushroom) enters die-back mode, causing potency and food quality to decline rapidly.

Is that not why you go back to the dunk after the harvest to revert it back into fruiting.  I just picked this morning when i found them to be fully open.  Pics included and if that is an RR quote you should make it look like a quote as not to plagiarize.  And why would a spore drop stop production when they are the life blood of mushrooms.
