Slow MadBag colonization? Or just my impatience?
    #18409147 - 06/12/13 03:17 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

So it's been 5 days since the last mash, and 27 days since inoculation (with B+ spores), and I'm starting to worry. I expected it to "zoom" past where it was before after mashing, but it doesn't seem that way. The only areas that are solid white are the corners.

The bag smells fine (shroomy smell, no moldy or rotten smell). There's also condensation on the inside, which I've heard is healthy and normal.

Oh, and (I'm probably gonna get slapped for this), I've been picking the bag up and looking at it every day, sometimes twice a day. Is this bad? I try not to rough it up when I do this. I actually hold it by the coat hanger that I have it taped to. I hang it in my closet.

Should I stop moving it around to look at it and just leave it alone for a week or so? Like I said, it's been almost a month and I feel like it should have been fully colonized by now.

What do you mean "the last mash"? How many times have you mashed it? You should only do it one time, if at all.

Oh ... Whoops. That last one was the third time. I don't plan to do it anymore.

Well I think I see pins. But I can still see some grain which means incomplete colonization which probably means contamination. Either that or I exposed the bag to too much light and made it pin early.

If the latter is the case, will colonization still continue?

And will I be lucky to even get an eighth as far as yield goes?

Can't see shit from the pictures due to cell phone, but no amount of light will cause early pinning.

Edit: introduction to FAE of a fully colonized substrate will cause pinning.

So then it's probably just contaminated.

Just for future knowledge, when you're allowing spawn / substrate to colonize, it's ideal to have a natural light cycle. I allow my grains to colonize near a window where they can receive plenty of natural daylight. You'll find a lot of old information here where people colonized in the dark, which works, but a natural light cycle is ideal.
