Alkaloid accumulation in cacti?
    #1840905 - 08/22/03 03:50 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Just wondering how long it takes for seed grown cacti (San Pedro) to accumulate sufficient amounts of alkaloids. I know you Americans have an abundance of cuttings in circulation, since it is a popular ornamental over there. The material, therefore, could possibly be quite old. The situation is very different in Europe, here the companies mostly sell much younger, seed grown specimens. Is there any rule of thumb for when alkaloid concentration stagnates?

It is widely believed that older specimens contain a higher concentration of alkaloids. Tricho's of any size should have some alkaliods but harvesting from larger specimens seems to make more sense all around.

Depends on size and stress of plant. A plant that's been dried out and stressed will make you trip just by looking at it. At the effective level of mescaline I believe the appropriate question was not how much should I take but did I take too much.
