pins vs. aborts
    #1840716 - 08/22/03 02:51 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

i have some cakes that have pins all over them. some of them i am noticing some growth but on the others no noticable changes in the last couple of days so i picked a couple to see if they were rotten and found that they seemed to be healthy inside and out. is it possible for them to have stalled or something? i also have cakes with cauliflower on them due to too much humidity i guess. i've now lowered the humidity so should i see improved growth? will low temeratures 70-72 slow the growth alot? i'm just not sure whats going on with these cakes, usually after i see pins i've got full grown shrooms in a week. please  :confused:send feed back

at this stage you want to fan a lot! also what are your lighting conditions? i recommend 12/12 in the beginning to get things going. Cauliflower=To high humidity, try and fix that foremost, 70-72 is a little on the low side but it shouldn't pose as big a problem as high humidity/lack of fresh air.

Hey fungusflip, I'm having problems with stalled growth also. You posted in my thread. You humidity is definitely too high. If you see water droplets forming on your mycelial growth, you need to lower the humidity. I'm trying to solve the problem on my cakes, but the problem is I'm away from my chamber and all I can do is relay info to a friend looking after the cakes for me. Keep me posted on your progress.

thank tim2133 yeah i built a new terrarium and its holding humidity better than i anticipated. i have the humidifier off now and i have the fans on constantly now so hopefully the rh will drop real fast and i'll adjust the timer on the humidifier so it wont get too humid again. i should have tested the terrarium first but i didn't and now i'm paying for it. damn! theres almost 100 cakes in there! i hope to see some changes soon. i'll let you know if i have any luck. do you think it would help if i sprinkled some fresh vermiculite on the cakes to absorb some of the moisture on the cakes?

I sprinkled some verm on the tops of my cakes just to make like a thin little casing for them. I don't know if it was necessary, surely not, but I had seen it done so I tried it. I don't think it would hurt anything to do it though. You might want to presterilize the verm in the over at 300-350 for 20 minutes though.
