 In Chicago - where to get jars and verm .. please help?

Hi. I'm having a bit of trouble finding these. Ii tried Target, Crate & Barrell, Kmart, & several restaurant suppy stores for the jars and i'm having little luck. Home Depot told me that they no longer carry Vermiculite. I called a few nursuries and they don't have it either. Anyway, i'm going through the phonebook now but in-the-meantime, if anyone can help me out, let me know. Thanks.

Nurseries w/o verm? That's odd. Anyway, Lowe's is up there. They carry verm (didn't get caught up in the aspestos scare) Here in the south, home canning is much more prevalent, but big grocery stores. Maybe even Walgreen's would have SOME jars.

My pet praire dog uses jelly jars,Pace picante sauce jars,or whatever he can find. Most of these are great for doing grains.Not so sure about PF tek cakes.

try walmart for the jars you really have to look around for them many times I will ask someone that works there and they wont have any clue if they have the item i want

Yeah,we have seen a lot of jars and canning supplies at the grocery stores lately,but that might be a regional thing.

Up north we jars in almost every supermarket in my town. (about 6 stores in town carry all kinds of the good jars.) But finding a more course verm. is hard to find, just this really crushed up small verm.???
Also Florida ROCKS!! (used to live there!)

jewels will have your jars in chi for sure.
and homedepot has some curse verm which works better then one at brew and grow.

Ace hardware is the best place I have found to get jars in a major city, and menards for verm....

I just picked up a couple bags of coarse verm from Home Depot. I drove an hour and a half out of my way when I had seen that they had it in stock per their web site. Each 2 cubic foot bag cost me around $20. You can order it from their website, and orders over $75 I BELIEVE have no shipping charges. If they tell you they are no longer stocking it, it is probably because of demand reductions. Most items of that nature will sell better in late winter into early spring. Business models know how to make profit, which is precisely why we will have Christmas items for sale long before thanksgiving this year.
Amazon.com is also a decent resource for obtaining the 1/2 pint wide mouth jars.
There does seem to be less and less of the "wide mouth" jars that we are used to, and it seems that there is a new half pint jar that has a shoulder...which is NO GOOD for our purposes. I cannot believe that they would phase out one design for another.
IMHO the hardest part of this hobby at times is finding all the supplies CLOSE TO HOME and REASONABLY priced....followed closely by patience.

Good point. I remember commenting on a 7 year old thread about where to find silica when I first joined . I felt like it was still relevant information but I got blasted anyways. Well for information's sake....
Like Whippy said, Home Depot sells a GIANT 2 cubic ft bag of Verm for $20. 2 cubic ft doesn't sound like too much but they must get that measurement while the verm is compressed or something because this bag could probably fill 15 gallons.

Sorry FooMan...didn't really even think about it because it's a local store for a lot of people...but good catch none the less.
