Hey Jordy just wondering are the fish you guys call Spanish mackerel the same as we have here in the states or are they an entirely different species? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_Spanish_mackerel

They are from the same family (Scomberomorus) of Mackerel but are entirely different species. The Atlantic Spaniard has spots on it where the Narrow Barred Spanish Mackerel in Australia has vertical stripes, or 'bars' from it's namesake.
Size is also a big difference; from what I have read previously about the Atlantic Spaniard, they seem to only grow to around about 15lb or so. The largest Spaniard I have personally seen here in Australia would have been around the 60lb mark. They probably grow bigger than that.
Does the Atlantic Spaniard have a vicious set of teeth? The Spaniards here have been known to take off fingers if you're not careful. It's like a mouthful of serrated steak knives that mesh with each other.

Now those are some size differences. What we call mackerel in Europe is the Atlantic mackerel, and it doesn't grow larger than 3 or 4lb. You have to catch them in numbers to make it really worthwhile.

Shroomhunstman, still better than I did last weekend!! I'm planning on heading out next Sunday for a bit of a fish again, more just testing out the new boat since I have just finished it. There wont be any major sportsfish action, but I might get a good dinner at the very least!
woaronum, we have a bunch of different mackerel species here in Australia. We have Blue Mackerel, although the species name here in Australia is Slimy Mackerel (we usually just call them Slimies for short) and they are the number one bait for Marlin off the Sydney area. Generally between 10-15 inches in size, we use them live or stitched up as a skip or swim bait. Should see the mackerel skip and swim baits they use up north for the 1000lb+ Black Marlin near the Great Barrier Reef. It's not unusual to see two or three 30lb+ Spanish Mackerel stitched up and splashing behind the boats up there.

Good to hear about these large dimensions. Fishing in Europe usually is on a smaller scale, except if you go for catfish or for halibut in Scandinavia.

You'd be surprised how many British people's jaws hit the ground when I tell them how the baitfish we use to catch marlin are bigger than their usual target catch and fight harder. We do have some great fishing here in Australia, it's just a shame that minority groups give the in-power political their support in exchange for locking fisherman out of fisheries. We already have a ridiculously high percentage of all the world's marine parks. We don't need anymore, our fishing is still good and recreational attitudes are even better

Jordy this is true every where as far as bait size I almost always use a fly or bait as big as situations allow "Big Bait = Big Fish most times. Though I mainly fish fresh water I have seen friends use 50 lb amberjacks for live bait shark fishing. And a 15" bass will greedily try to eat a 6 to 9" fly unless they are targeting smaller food. Like you said in another thread "Match the Hatch". And yes Spanish in our waters have some sharp dentures, maybe not enough to take a finger but a 30 to 80 lb mono shock helps as they are wire shy . The average size you get is between 2 and 6 lbs but I have seen a few in the 10 to 12 range but these usually don't run in schools or even small packs.

Yeah when I rig my skirted lures I typically use 2mm, 49 strand 316 Stainless wire to rig twin hook rigs or a single at the back of the lure. A bit of insurance against those bite offs when we get Wahoo around. Don't really get the Spaniards though unless there has been a huge push of hot water from the north.
On a side note, after a 12 month long project I have FINALLY finished my little 15 foot trailerboat and taking it out on Sunday. Not going after anything huge, more of a shake down than anything but I'll still be fishing!!

BTW i did find a pic of your spaniards they resemble a small wahoo. Are they schoolers like kings or solitary like a wahoo?

r00tuuu123,
They do resemble wahoo a bit, although the wahoo is generally a lot darker in colour and they frequent completely different areas. Wahoo are past the continental shelf usually and Spaniards are generally in shallower water. I know of blokes getting double hook ups on them but I thin they are solitary for the most part. Have only caught two as I have never lived in an area where they are frequently caught (mostly up north).
Shins that is a top effort!! What were you using to catch them? And was it a stocked or wild fishery?

Got a couple squid on the drift yesterday, was a bit more of a shakedown to figure out what I need to change on the boat. Plus, the wind made the drift a bit quick for squid and cuttlefish.
They did make for a nice entree to the peri peri chicken main course though

Very nice Shroomhunstman! Did you weigh/measure it?
Heading out this weekend to do a bit more squid drifting and maybe try for some local Aussie fare around the reefs. We get Snapper (same species as the NZ Snapper) and gummy sharks which I believe are very similar to the dogfish you guys get. Gummy shark is what most local Aussie fish and chips shop sell dipped in beer batter and fried, better known as 'flake'. I think my mouth is watering already...
I'm so happy to have my boat all finished and able to go fishing whenever I want

You are in PA where abouts ? and is that a large mouth or a spotted bass ? Kind of hard to tell from the angle of the pic .

Yes I'm in Cambria County right now for school and family. Largemouth Bass. Sorry about the angle- I thought it would correct the angle but it rotated the pic like that by itself.
Jordy I didn't measure it but I would say it weighed about 2-3 pounds and was over 15 inches. Caught it off a 1/16 white rooster tail.

Not to derail the thread but Atlantics and Frigates are loads of fun on UL tackle like 2-4 lb with bucktails as long as you don't need to go deep.

What lake did you catch it from? I have fished a bunch of them, But mainly Yellow creek. I have heard that if you can sneak into the resorvoir on 386 there are some huge Northerns.

Tried to chase some Snapper today but a stiff 25-30mph breeze kept me in the shallows. Did manage some nice big calamari squid that went down a treat for dinner
