Depends on the region. In the lower 48, the bull trout seem to have a rather broad high elevation range across a few western states whereas the dolly vardens seem to be a coastal species concentrated around Puget sound. There may be some habitat overlap for the 2 species further north, up in British Columbia. That's what I can gather..

That's still a hell of a fish no matter what it is. That thing could eat a 3 lb smallmouth and still have room for desert.

Lake near my new house apparently holds a heathy population of smallmouth bass and stocked rainbow trout. Gonna go check it out!

What kind of tackle do you guys use for trout fishing in lakes??
I've been slinging spinners around in a lake stocked with rainbows and I'm only catching smallmouth regardless of weight, style, colour...
Seems like everyone there is just fishing floating powerbait off the bottom.
Apparently the bass aren't as interested in the powerbait but will get to worms and lures before the trout do
Share trout fishing wisdom plz

I like to troll wiggle-warts or other small crankbaits in a frog pattern behind the kayak real slow. Also try flies under a bobber if you're not set up to fly fish. Stocked trout love anything orange in color.
Good luck out there..

I have boxes and boxes of sucker spawn patterns tyed with micro yarn of every color they make on # 14 to 16 hooks I used to use for stocked trout Till one day fishing for prespawn bass I took a 20" brownie on a 1/0 clouser minnow. Then I started tying Speys for great lakes steelies on #2 to 3/0 hooks and cleaned house And even smaller stocked trout in my local streams. Big baits = big fish most times. You may only catch 1 or 2 fish a day but they are gonna be big and greedy. would you rather have a steak dinner or a kids meal?

Thanks, think I'm gonna try a combination of things fished off the bottom with a slip sinker of some sort.
Thinking of giving floating worms a try

If you're fishing live worms off the bottom with a Carolina rig, get one of those worm inflater syringes to suspend them a bit.
Now I want to out fishing. Spring salmon should be showing up with the summer run native steelhead following close behind. Nothing quite like fiesty, ocean fresh fish 3-8# chrome that bite swung nymphs and skating dry flies..

Wanna know what's fun guys? Hooking a 500lb Mako Shark from a 15 foot runabout. We spent 2 and a half hours on the fish on 30lb gear with sunset drag before getting it close enough for a tag shot. Biggest fish from my little tub yet by far!!

Depends man a 10 llb striper in heavy water below a dam can be as much fun on light fly gear standing on shore,. .

I dunno, watching the back corner get pulled around as I tried to pull on the leader is pretty crazy. We tried to motor forward as I had the leader and it nearly dislocated my shoulders lol

Nice fish. The shark story sounds pretty rad!
Spent the weekend fishing at my lady's cottage. There's a steep drop-off about 20 feet from shore and I was getting loads of bites fishing live/artificial worms over the ridge.
I bought a decent deep-diving crank bait and it wildly out performs all the cheap dollar-store garbage I've been throwing at them
Filled my reel with 4-lb line and it seems superior for fresh water bass/trout fishing. Also casts a lot farther than with the heavy stuff that came on it.

Finally caught a trout AFAIK there is no stocking or prevalent trout fishing in this lake system, but sure enough I got one on a rubber worm in one of the canals connecting two lakes.
Got the camera up and running again, gonna snap some pics of tomorrow's trip if I make it out.
