Should I be concerned with this or is it just a pin?
    #18396884 - 06/10/13 11:31 AM (11 years, 7 months ago)

I've been reading the boards for a while but never needed to post until now. This place has been invaluable, so thank you all for the great info for my first grow!

I am getting a decent number of pins now across 8 cakes and I noticed one that looks strange. It was the first to appear and was cream colored at first, but it seems to have gotten darker and hasn't really been growing like the rest of the pins that appeared after it. I'm wondering if this is an abort/contam or if it's just an unusual looking pin. Any ideas?

Sorry guys, site is blocked at work so I haven't been checking in. I don't know much about the strain as the syringe was a freebie, but I know it said Ecuador. The rest of my pins are white stemmed with a cream color at the tip, and they look a little more like a tiny version of the classic shroom shape. This one started cream colored but has gotten a little darker, and it is a pea-sized sphere.

I am fanning 3-4 times a day and have reduced misting to about once a day ever since the pins appeared.

One thing that may be worth noting is that I removed the cakes from the chamber and put them on a table covered with a cardboard box for about 20 minutes a few days ago. I wanted to drill holes in the bottom of the chamber and add more perlite. I'm just hoping there were no contam issues from that. I'm probably just being paranoid though.

Thanks for the replies guys, this board is awesome

If it is an albino strain, it seems fine to me. If it halts growing and the top turns blackish/blue with a greyed body I would say it is an abort. However, I'm not sure if that is the case with albino strains. I've grown albino in the past but I do not recall seeing any aborts. Either way, if it is an abort you have little to worry about, as some aborts are usually expected - but if all the pins start to abort, then you might have a problem.

you're fae and misting seem fine(I usually mist twice per day, but that is just me) as for you're fc, is it a SGFC? If so you DEFINITELY need to drill holes in the bottom(all sides), because if you dont it defeats the whole purpose.

Yep, SGFC. I had sides/top drilled before and about an inch of perlite. I wasn't getting any pins so I read up some more and realized why the bottom is so important. Had to do some emergency surgery on it and made a mess in my kitchen, but I was able to get the holes in, add about 2-3 inches more perlite, and elevate the chamber on some books. As I was putting the cakes back in I realized I already had 3 pins I hadn't noticed lol

Do you think it might be aborted, or is that just a general observation lol

If you look carefully in those pics you can see one of my normal pins a bit lower and to the right. I can take more pics when I'm home if it would help!

also, I'm not sure what aborts look like yet, this is my first (trial) grow. I'm going to be doing a PE grow next now that I've refined my teks a bit

it doesnt look aborted(yet) to me. another possibility is that it is a mutant. I presume you used MS correct?

If my understanding is correct, yeah, this is MS. I inoculated from a syringe.

I assume mutants aren't nearly as cool as they sound...

Aborts have always appeared to me to be grey in color, perhaps with the cap a slightly darker grey, and then by the time they are aborted, the cap turns dark or blue, and the size of the pin shrivels a bit. Just keep an eye on it, people still like to collect and eat aborts.

for sure man, one time I ate approx. a gram and a half of straight aborts/pins and it hit me like a 4-5g trip.

I'll have to be sure to separate my aborts from the rest of the harvest then, cause I've actually never eaten any mushrooms before lol

Looking to introduce myself to this world very gradually if possible

Awesome! I usually use aborts as toppers, since they are so much smaller they can add increments of yummyness.

Yes! Save any aborts. And my, are you in for a treat then! Read up as much as you can, bad trips are avoidable - but the excitement alone might cover you. I look forward to when you do, it's a beautiful thing. Truly.

I know, I can't explain how excited I am for this! I've tripped twice before, but never via mushrooms. Definitely the most powerful experiences of my life. Since then my philosophy about this kind of thing has changed a bit and I am much more interested in going the natural route. I really have no idea what to expect comparatively, but I am unbelievably excited, especially since I grew them myself!

once I'm comfortable with what this kind of trip feels like, I'm sure I'll up the dosage pretty quickly  I just need to know what I'm getting myself into first. hopefully I'll get a decent yield and I can afford to experiment a bit!

lol I am optimistic. honestly any yield would be a success for me. I am just having fun learning about the lifecycle and seeing what an incredible lifeform it is.

so do you recommend I just assume that's an abort, pick it and start drying it? or should I let it go another day for the hell of it?

wait until the flush ends and pick them all together that is what most people do. some people pick periodically through the flush, I guess its just whatever floats you're boat:shrug:

At the very least I wait until the others grow to be sure it's aborting. The only time I pick them is when I feel like things are looking too "crowded".

While its fun to share the experience with friends, It is also very rewarding by yourself. I've seen great things alone, I tend to be a thinker and more imaginative. Once I went to the pool by myself, and I floated there staring at the sky and witnessed a great battle under the moonlight and stars, like angels or valkyries.  It even started to rain, and when the droplets hit the water it looked like diamonds. When I dove underwater, it was like I had some kind of secret world all to myself. This was at apartments and I didn't want to risk laughing aloud, even though I was so happy I wanted to - I laughed underwater instead, and the bubbles seemed to dance around me. It was awesome.
I have since become a fan of the natural - in any way, from food to organic clothing, to drugs. Probably the best thing I could of done to change my life, the most rewarding, too. It was like waking up for the first time and seeing clarity. Before you do it, be sure to be in a good mood, clear your mind of any worries - it will be your night, and nothing can take that way from you so long as you don't let it. Just remember, no matter what, that the experience is like a tool, a map. You are the navigator, you hold the compass. Even when I thought I was starting to have a bad trip - perhaps because of the confusion, the worry that I didn't know what was happening to my body - I soon realized that nothing was happening at all, it was only my thoughts. You get to a state of comfort and you can easily  redirect your thoughts. Once I thought I was stuck in my mattress, laying face down and couldn't breathe. I reminded myself that if someone were to look at me in that moment, they would only see me laying there, with nothing seemingly amiss. You'll be fine, it'll be great. I love looking at the sky and going outside and just watching, or throwing on some good music - Pink Floyd just seems natural and perfect for the experience. Or watch Fantasia. ;p

I completely understand the natural thing. as I mentioned, I tripped twice before on what was supposedly acid (who knows), and both times had profound impacts on me.

the first one made me realize how much I disliked my job and the fact that I was on a path to stay stuck there forever if I didn't do something about it. I quit a week later and moved to an area in another state I had always thought sounded beautiful (around the Smokey Mountains) and I wanted to experience it first hand. I couldn't be happier I moved here. I've never felt closer to nature, and although I get a little lonely at times having left all my friends and family, I would rather feel like I'm in the right place and it's everyone else that's in the wrong place, if that makes sense.

the second time was largely a very bad trip. I vaguely remember taking 7-8 showers in a row, trying to scrub my skin off because it seemed unclean, and being too afraid to step outside in my apt complex just to let my dog pee. this was right after I moved here, and I didn't take the set & setting warnings seriously and I paid for it. I was freaked out being in a new area all alone, and to make matters much worse, I had just been in a bad car accident 3 days earlier that I narrowly escaped without injuries. I was in a terrible frame of mind to be tripping.

but the good thing that came out of it was towards the end when I finally was ready to eat something and my brain/body totally rejected the artificial frozen dinners I was planning on eating. I felt an internal warning that I wasn't allowed to eat that kind of shit anymore, and I ignored it and took a bite anyway. started vomiting everywhere immediately. ever since then I've switched to an entirely natural diet, nothing but meat, vegetables, fruit, eggs and a little dairy. I feel so much better than I've ever felt in my life.

that switch to the natural is also what made me decide to step away from acid and try mushrooms. as much as acid helped me, I just feel so much more comfortable knowing what I'm putting in my body. I just need see what the actual experience is like now and how it differs!

you made it sound very beautiful though. I am really looking forward to it. I will probably check out Fantasia, I was also planning on watching Alice in Wonderland for the first time. I have also been programming an extremely psychedelic visualizer that I am really excited to see while tripping.

sorry, didn't mean for this to turn into a novel. and this was just supposed to be a thread about pin identification too  is this place pretty lax about off-topic posting?

I am very impressed that you decided to quit your job and move just like that. It was a similar thing for me, I tried mushrooms with my boyfriend for the first time and a lot of things just didn't seem to be in the right place any more. I also ended up moving away from my family, friends etc. I would ultimately like to move out of the country, or try some time in Colorado. I always wanted to, and then they legalized marijuana and now it seems like the perfect fit should I choose to stay in this country. I have been to Thailand, Japan, and Laos. There are so many places I still want to see, and would looooove to go to Europe too, of which I have no experience. But before I do all that, I felt I needed to take some time to heal and find myself again. It took me awhile to realize the person I had become had been defined by trying to fit in in school, a mold given to me by my parents, the friends around me etc. I didn't realize I'd become old enough to be whoever I want now, but now I just got to figure it out. Mushrooms has helped me do that in many ways, and even more so, ayahuasca (Although I have only done it twice. It's getting harder for me to get mhrb) but if you can ever get some, I think ayahuasca would be perfect for you. It's quite different from shrooms, and it really did change my life.

I first started eating healthy, switching to a more plant based diet, and then organic. I then started juicing, which is what I live by now. I do like meat, but the meat that you get doesn't really taste appealing to me anymore, I still get sick from it. If I could get more organic meat, I would eat much more of it - but I guess ideally I'd love to live somewhere with land where I can raise my own animals. Though who knows, by then I might have already become fully vegetarian or vegan. When I try to eat any processed food, especially after detoxing my body I usually get sick.

Anyways, I ended up rambling too. We could always make a new thread, but for these kinds of thoughts, there are so many things to be said. After doing mushrooms, I also could no longer handle doing any synthetic drugs, especially opiates of which I was once addicted. I don't even like taking advil or nyquil or any medication, because I feel drugged when I do - and I don't want to feel that way anymore...

It seems a likely thing that people who start into this hobby are rewarded in more ways than one can count - the knowledge is vast, and I feel without it my life, my brain would have remained stagnant. I'd reach a part of my life where I was content, it was mundane, and now I can ask questions again, the curiosity that I had lost has returned.

Look into ayahuasca too! And if off-topic is a rule breaker, think of a snazzy topic and we can move to a different thread! Lot's of love to you and your grow!

I would love to travel like that, I've never even left the country. I am really into ancient history and would love to visit some historical ruins as well as just see what nature itself has to offer, especially somewhere like New Zealand. definitely have to get the finances settled first though!

as for quitting my job, yes, it surprised me too. I have always found myself on this narrow path, moving from checkpoint to checkpoint without ever stopping to wonder why or what I was gaining from it. to be honest, I'm not entirely sure I like my new job that much either, but the relocation itself was a great decision, and its given me some mental relief while I decide what to do about employment in the long term. there are things I am passionate about that could feasibly become a source of income, but they're risky (business-wise, not legally  :smile2:) and I have to overcome my fear of failure and potentially having to pick myself up out of the dirt if it doesn't work out. I'm hoping mushrooms will give me some new perspective on my life in that regard and even if it doesn't convince me to go for it I'm hoping it will provide insight to help me reach some kind of conclusion.

ayahuasca has interested me very much for some time now, but it seems like quite a different level of commitment, both to obtain and to experience. I am a huge fan of an author named Graham Hancock who speaks extensively of his positive experiences with ayahuasca and how it saved his life from his own destructive habits. definitely hoping to try it some day, but I decided to start simpler first with the mushrooms lol

stagnation is something that is easy to fall into without ever realizing it. I see it in my parents as well as in my own life. it's way too easy to assume your life is like a train that requires tracks to move forward, but when you can manage to knock yourself off those tracks (entheogenically or otherwise) you realize that you never needed them at all. the hard part is stopping yourself from slowly crawling back into that rut and not learning anything from it. that's part of the reason I took the plunge with quitting my job. I knew that I had been very fortunate to get an objective "third person" perspective on it but if I didn't act on it it would fade away and ultimately have provided nothing as I fell back into my old patterns.

anyway, the grow is looking great! every time I check on it I notice more pins and the rest have grown noticeably larger. they're starting to look more and more like actual mushrooms. I don't think I'm going to get a huge yield, as the # of pins is not nearly as large as some of the ones I've seen on here, but like I said before, I am proud to be getting anything at all. thanks for the support, you guys are cool as hell!

tough to say man, I made that change exactly when the pins finally appeared. very unscientific of me lol. I can say that the pins look healthy and have been growing rapidly so I would be willing to bet it was a big help. I noticed more condensation on the walls and lid for sure, but not to the point where it's dripping, which seems like a good thing!

krunkmaster, this is indeed a very rewarding hobby which Im sure will only result in expanding in your scientific research. I do, however, recommend that you (as well as any other fresh scientist) look into some bulk teks. BRF cakes are the way to go when learning this tedious culture, hands down. But once you're familiar with the PF Tek, spawning some quarts of rye to bulk coir in a monotub will blow your mind with results.

Search, read, search, read, search, read... and repeat. If you do that, the results will be wonderful. Patience is key to success and the last tip... do NOT tell anybody about cultivation. It can lead to trouble. It's like Fight Club.

Besides all that mumbo jumo, you're doing good.

thanks Hank, I definitely would like to move to something more advanced after this. like you said, I just wanted to familiarize myself with the life cycle of this peculiar little creature and see if I enjoy its gifts before learning how to cultivate it efficiently. would you say it is just as easy to be discreet with bulk growing processes? I'm in an apartment complex but I have a decent degree of privacy. could get dicey if things get too large or smelly though lol

and I am doing my best to keep it a secret! not hard when I haven't met any friends in a new town, but I find myself wanting to gush about it nonetheless. my brother told me a long time ago when he was growing weed that if nobody knows then you can never get caught. seems like solid advice. tbh my paranoia is why I am stuck with this stupid username. don't want to use my normal handle here lol

hell yeah, and I agree with hank, after this try bulk, I have yet to do it but it is for sure the very next on my list. And silence is golden man. Dont let ANYONE know about you're shit, not your sister, best friend, or even you're grandma. If you can do that you're golden. and as for stealth and smell, its pretty much going to be the same size/smell as you're sgfc. you just use those plastic walmart tubs or tubs like it.

Rye to bulk coir is my preferred method. I think it's way easier, aside from the fact that beginners to the hobby to not usually want to invest in a PC. BUT it's totally worth it.
You can buy rye in bulk online, I got 50 lbs and the box doesn't seem to of gotten any lighter :P

But aside from that, you could still do BRF cakes and do bulk coir using a monotub. That's actually what I've got going now as I had some extra verm and brf leftover I wanted to get rid of.

If you ever did want to try with friends, you could feel the waters on the subject and then maybe oneday, when you are ready, say you got a hold of some. But in terms of cultivation, don't tell! You've got us on Shroomery to gush to after all ;p

I'm soooo excited for you!

I already own a PC lol. but I think im going to try both the rye to coir and BRF to coir at the same time(different tubs of course) next time.

I feel as though it can be more discreet due to a build I came across on here. A completely opaque 66 quart tub with a few LEDs siliconed into the lid to ensure no light escapes will be a prime chamber to work with. Monotubs are damn near self-sustaining from my experience and with what other have posted. Im going to paste a few links down below for an extremely easy yet very rewarding bulk tek that I now use. From one mono, getting 6oz. cracker dry is as easy as the PF cakes. The best part is rendering two tubs from one multispore syringe and not having to stink up the city air with pasturizing farm poop. City folk will certainly question those smells. Since no poo is used, it's virtually odorless... unless you run the pressure cooker dry with grains in it. I had 10 syringes lying around... so do the math

All you need to do is read over this stuff a few times and apply previous knowledge. I was intimidated by these bulk grows at first thinking the yields meant complexity but it's truly easier in my opinion... but that's with prior cake experience.

Now once you're familiar with the bulk growing and you want beautiful, prolific, consistent flushes... I highly recommend cloning the tissue of the first to pin and also the largest to some agar. All in due time. Baby steps with this helped me keep away frustration, contamination and stress.

I hope this helps and the very best of luck to you.

Hank, thank you so much for the links. I was going to ask where to start with bulk teks but I felt like that probably gets asked so often that it would seem lazy of me

other than the two tubs, are those links all teks that you can use together as they are for different aspects of the grow? I looked through several of them and it seems that way but I am really unfamiliar with anything other than PF tek so it's a lot to take in. of course I will read much more closely when I am preparing to start a new grow!

Yes, Krunk. They can be used together for the most part. The three main spectrums in a bulk grow are: the chamber being used (monotub), the grain tek which will be for colonizing mycelium (rye grain is most popular and easiest) and the substrate which the colonized grain will be transferred to (coir being most accessible).

And to give a brief description of a bulk grow...

The quart jars will be properly measured with dry grain and water which is then pressure cooked for complete sterilization (like a 1/2 brf jar). Once cooled, the MS syringe is used to inject 2-3cc of spore into each quart jar which can then be shaken to disperse the spores all over the grains. Let it colonize a bit and then shake again. Once it's fully colonized and without consolidation, it's time to prepare the simple coir substrate tek and dumping it into the mono. Larger amounts of colonized grain used in the substrate will help colonize the prepared and pasturized coir quicker while aiding in keeping the contaminates from taking hold.

Once you have some successful PF grows under your belt, it's going to be a breeze.

So again, the three main pointers in this are: monotub build, rye grain preparation and substrate preparation.

(Don't mess with hpoo (hourse manure) unless you have your own place and a carbon filter for the farm stench it puts off)

:fuckinawesome:  May the schwartz be with you.

that sounds incredibly simple, I see why you are pushing me in that direction. it actually doesn't seem that much more work than PF, though I guess you need a PC (which I already have). you would have to be pretty dedicated to pull in manure rather than just using rye grain

I am excited to try this now. I haven't even eaten a single mushroom yet and I'm already stoked to try growing in bulk lol

is consolidation something you just have to eyeball?

interesting how some of them look like they're coming straight out of the vermiculite. does the cake root into the verm once it's been there long enough or something?

you're right, I went and looked at my second syringe (which I thought was APE) and realized I actually swapped them! I wanted to use the Ecuador syringe for the first batch to learn how this works, then grow APE the second time once I knew what I was doing. looks like I was so excited I mixed them up. no big deal, it seems to have worked out anyway :tongue2:

haha dont feel bad man, on my last grow the marker I labeled the jars with wore off(do to my chronic handling lol) so I had four different varieties but had no idea which was which :awehigh:

Edit: looking good man :highfive1:

The manure would be part of the substrate which is what the colonized rye grain would be spawned into (mixed within). That is, unless you're referring to just a cased layer of only Rye and a coir/verm casing for hydration and not spawning.

Consolidation isn't eyeballing. Colonization is though. Once the whole outside of a jar is completely white, that's when consolidation comes in play. It's the time frame in which the cakes finish up the middle of the substrate and use up almost all the nutrients to put forth in the fruiting stage. The longer you give time to consolidate a PF jar, the better your pinset will be.
Its said on here that 4-7 days after full outer colonization is enough to consolidate but I shoot for 2-2.5 weeks. As you see in the signature picture of mine with the scale, that's a 2.5 week consolidation result of only one cake. Dried to 4.8 which is a rather hefty weight for just one.  It was absolutely covered in fruit from top to bottom.

I was actually referring to this part:

if I'm reading that correctly, you actually want to avoid the consolidation when you're using that bulk method, rather than encouraging consolidation as with PF. your explanation makes sense though, I kind of figured from the name consolidation that it was about making it denser, but I didn't realize that identifying the consolidation stage was as simple as waiting till the outside edges were colonized.

fortunately, I (inadvertently) let my PF jars consolidate for a decent amount of time, because the timing worked out that I went on vacation right when I was thinking it was time to birth the cakes. that extra period was actually concerning me a bit, because I thought I'd come back to see it had started pinning and they died off because I wasn't there to birth them. but when I came back, everything just looked... whiter. I was pretty happy with how it worked out

1 week is just recommended for our inpatients, you can go over a month if it doesn't pin. pf jars also don't lose a whole lot of moisture in the jars:cool:

The reason you do not consolidate the jars when doing a bulk is because say they are 100% colonized - rather than waiting the extra days/weeks you are then breaking up the colonized cakes (if BRF, if it is grain it should crumble in pieces) all throughout your bulk substrate in the mono tub.
then they have to colonize the tub as they did the jars. Once the tub is colonized 100% you can let it consolidate in the tub a bit before fruiting.

I could be wrong, but I believe the thinking behind this is due to the fact that at the point of 100% colonization the growth speed of the mycelium would actually be faster than mycelium that has sat consolidating, for purpose of wanting the mycelium to colonize the tub. I would guess the consolidated myc would be in a more dormant state, waiting to fruit, so it is not ideal for moving to a bulk substrate.

also, because you dont want you're jars to initiate fruiting before you transfer to bulk.

cool, that all makes sense to me! it's interesting how it doesn't seem much more complicated/expensive yet is much more intimidating to new growers. I'm still glad I started with PF tek but it's funny that I was initially thinking I'll probably stick with it forever just because it's so easy.

new question(s) for you guys. there are fat mushrooms popping up all over the place, which is good. but I noticed a few of the bigger ones are starting to turn discolored, which doesn't seem like a huge deal if I get a few aborts, but I'm worried that the conditions in the chamber aren't right since it seems like any of them over a certain size are affected. I'm going to include a few pictures including one pic of my chamber so you guys can offer criticism. one thing that might be worth noting is that I am not using artificial lighting. I have it sitting on a table in my sunroom and I have just been using natural sunlight (but with all of the blinds almost completely closed 24/7).

and one more question. the biggest mushroom (I posted a pic on page 3) has already got a pretty flat cap. my understanding is that happens pretty late in the lifecycle, and you want to pick them before that point when the veil is starting to break. I am having trouble identifying the veil and whether it already broke. I've seen pictures online but I can't tell in my own setup what's going on. I do see a ring much closer to the base of the stem but it seems very early for the veil to have broken there. did this mushroom just not grow very large and is already mature? is it possible that this is another symptom of something wrong in my chamber, together with the discolorations?

sorry, I know it's a lot of questions, but I want to fix this ASAP if something is amiss!

pics:

thanks as always!

interesting.. is it just normal then for a whole flush to sometimes just not grow very large? it feels like that's indicating I'm doing something wrong in my chamber. maybe I'm just paranoid though lol

don't expect monsters on your first flush especially with any pe variety, they love consolidation and most pe varietys i've seen on cakes are second flush flourishers, just cut aback on the misting for a few days before dunking for the second flush

some people like to pick the biggest fruits(ones that are already mature)and let the rest catch up but In my personal experience if you pick them all per flush, each of the next flushes are more uniform. but that may just be me, cos you never really know with multispore lol do what you think is best man :gethigh: and if it fails, you will know what not to do next time

Isolation of the biggest monster and the first to pin will solve some issues with the plethora of different fruits from a multi spore. Place a piece of the mushrooms tissue onto agar and then transfer that to your grains once it has been split up to several other agar dishes.

I wish I had any of the equipment for that at the moment... I was expecting thefirst grow to be an experiment before I grow the APE and start cloning, but as I said I accidentally used the APE immediately! is it easy to work with agar? I could still try to do some isolation of the biggest specimens with future flushes I reckon.

Sure is! The only concern is having an even more sanitized area than you'd have when knocking up some PF jars.

It's simple to make a collapsible sealed plastic tent (as seen below)

woah, that's awesome. the layout of my apartment is not great for something like that but I could probably make it work. nice link Hank, thank you!

I picked some of the larger mushrooms last night and began drying, and now I'm working my way through the smaller ones. I was wondering whether I need to be aware of whether I'm leaving a small amount of the base behind on some of them. most pop off easily from rocking them but a few tore and left a tiny bit of flesh behind. I could certainly see it being vulnerable to mold. if so, how do you recommend removing it?

also, the closer I look the more extremely tiny aborts I find. they're especially prevalent around the layer of verm on top of the cakes. I'm picking them as I go, but it's tough with the verm there. should I remove all the verm somehow to make it easier? if so, is there a good way of doing it other than just wiping it with my hand?

Mine have left some flesh behind quite a few times but never posed as a problem for any molds. Nothing to worry about. The best way for removal of the stubborn stems to to give a light rocking back'n'forth followed by a twisting motion.

There isn't any reason to remove verm. Mushies love that stuff for moisture purposes but, if you felt the need to for experimental purposes, a light shaking of the cake and/or a very gentle brush of your finger will remove anything loose.

Off topic but equally exciting.... I also picked some fruits today from a few cakes. Ban Hua Thanon strain.

I only wanted to remove the verm because I was thinking I was done with my first flush. my understanding is that it's common to dunk again for ~12 hours at this point after letting the cakes dry out for a day or two.  I figured that would involve getting rid of the existing verm that I added for the double end casing.

I have picked pretty much everything at this point, although there are some very tiny guys still hanging around. I'm assuming there is no problem with leaving them on for the dunk? I could also wait to see if they grow, or just pick them. they are quite small though and there are a decent number of them so picking them would be a pain lol

and that's awesome man, do you have any pics? I've started to become really fascinated with how different these strains can look. that's why I'm excited to see the results of my next syringe (Ecuador). I think I am not going to bother with clones/prints on this current grow since I have been figuring this out as I go and it's been less than ideal. next time I will nail it!

Just pick the cakes up and submerge them in cool water for 12-16 hours. I advise to not re-roll cakes after the first flush because nothing will hold onto the verm resulting in a very messy fruiting chamber when misting.

As for pictures, I don't have a digital camera and the cell phone battery gets removed when I'm within a mile of the laboratory.

In addition to the whole stubborn fruit situation, you can always let them mature a bit more. I've found it to be MUCH easier to remove fruits from substrate when they've matured a while longer than the ideal harvest point. You know, the whole "pick them right before the veil breaks" speak? That's not necessary. It's quite alright to let the caps flatten out but in the case of a Penis Envy, I really don't know much about the whole flattening-out with that strain.

I was really wondering about the "pick before the veil breaks" thing. it was never clear whether that was supposed to maximize potency (somehow) or if it was to avoid dropping spores or something. thanks for the tip, that's really great to know

and good idea with the cell phone battery. I'd do the same if it wasn't in my house lol

it is said that they stop producing magic once the veil breaks so that it can focus on dropping the spores. also yeah, people dont like the mess lol (I left a a flush growing for 3 days and came back and EVERYTHING was black from spores lol) and what gets me is how spores end up on top of the tallest mushrooms lol.

looks like I got about 6.2 grams from my first flush (8 cakes), which seems extremely poor to me based on what I've read/seen around here

let's hope second flush does a little better. the good news is that's more than enough for me to try a medium dose for the first time today, so I'm excited about that! probably going to do it within the next hour or so

what a great experience! I mostly just laid around in the sun with my dog while listening to music, I think took her for like 6 walks lol. I ended up having an hour long conversation with a neighbor and it was pretty funny trying to take her seriously while it looked like her skin was melting. all in all it was a blast though. I haven't felt so good mentally in years. I talked to my mom afterwards and she mentioned how happy I sounded. I haven't seen her in 6 months and I know she wants to visit but they are tight on money, so I offered to pay to fly them down because I want to see them. she started crying on the phone lol

very curious how a high dosage would go now. looking forward to trying that in a few weeks!

Im so happy for you man, im glad you had a great experience, if you want to go to the next level(dimension) double you're dose :psychsplit:  I took a quarter about a month ago and it was out of this world.

Ooo... that certainly IS a small yield for that amount of cakes. That's just higher than what I get from only one. Did you dunk'n'roll them before placing in the fruiting chamber? And if you did, there's a chance that they were drowned from a constant liberal misting if that's the case. I've found that cakes like to be dry-ish during pinning (for a prolific pinset) except for the soaked casing in the "inverted dome shape" that the bottom of the jar produces which becomes the top once birthed. After some growth has taken hold to the rolled verm layer, it's good to mist and THEN fan to induce the loved evaporation.

I hope this is making sense. 2k primer and beer has me a wee bit delirious.

There are 96 cakes going in three TiT's (for cloning and experimental purposes) in which 10 of those have just produced 413 wet grams. I estimate that it'll be 40 grams cracker dry and that's how it has been since my first harvest a couple years ago. I would say that there is a bakers dozen of experiments in your future to improve your results.

But in the end, you produced a mushie or two which is great success in this nerve-wrecking hobby.

:seriousthumbsup:

yep, I did dunk and roll. I never quite felt comfortable that I was misting properly, so that could very well be it. I felt like I may have been doing it a little too much. but I also know people were really insistent on keeping the humidity extremely high, which is why I was doing it so much.

would you say that the perlite alone would generally take care of the humidity, and the misting is just for evaporation to trigger pinning? in other words, cut back severely on the misting once the pins appear? once my pins appeared I was misting the walls directly for humidity, but much less so over the cakes themselves. there were tons and tons of mushrooms growing, they just never got very large other than maybe 3 of them, which still were not very large. I wonder if I was just drowning everything.

either way, I haven't been misting the last 48 hours, so today I am going to dunk them and then see if I can get a better 2nd flush. maybe the second flush will be  good because the nutrients didn't get too used up the first time :tongue2:

thanks man! regardless of how the next flush goes, I have enough left for a pretty serious trip next time, so I will probably do that in a few weeks. I would like to rent a cabin in the mountains for the weekend to get out of this apartment complex and a little closer to nature. I was at one recently that was cheap ($70 a night!) and really beautiful so I'd like to go back there, and the owner specifically mentioned that if you want to be left alone during your stay they will not stop by at all, so I will tell him I am working

I'm especially interested in seeing some of the more visual effects. I had some very subtle ones that would come and go, but nothing wild. the effects I had were mostly in my thoughts and mood, like an extremely strong sense of euphoria and appreciation for my life and family. I must have looked really silly walking my dog around because I know I had a huge grin on my face the whole time.

oh, another thing re: low yield. as much as I would love to have gotten a massive harvest, I feel fortunate that I still managed to collect enough to try both a medium and high dosage. since this is my first time trying them, it's invaluable in deciding whether I want to invest in moving on  to bulk growing. if this had been a total failure and I had gotten 0, I would be back to square one with starting another PF grow. so all in all, I am not too upset! I just need to learn what went wrong.

lol my dog definitely picked up on it, just as she did the two times I tried LSD. but she seems want to be around me more when it happens. my living room was bathed in sunlight and I laid down in it and she plopped her head on top of my chest. I laid there petting her and thinking about her for like an hour. she was a stray I found on the street when she was just a puppy so we have a pretty tight bond

oh yeah, I forgot to ask! I mentioned before that I'm using natural lighting. the chamber is sitting on a table directly to the left of a window, whose blinds are generally kept closed. that was partially to limit the strength of the light coming in but also to be discreet. I am not using artificial lighting to do 12/12. would you guys recommend I do that instead?

Personally, I've never used natural lighting. It's always been 6500k tubes on a 12/12 but from what the forums say, indirect sunlight is fine.

second flush has begun! I bought a digital hygrometer and it has been really useful. as long as my humidity is good and the cakes have started pinning, is there any reason to do any more misting? I did administer some water directly to the verm base with a syringe but other than that I haven't sprayed at all lately. good idea?

you definetely want to mist daily(about twice a day or so) but not too heavily. you want to keep the cakes on the dryer side but not too dry. My schedule consisted of: sprayed for 30-50 sec. in the morning then fanning for about 60-90 sec. directly after, then I would fan for about 30 sec once every few hours or so, then I would spry n' fan again in the evening. Hope that helps man
