Should I be concerned with this or is it just a pin?
    #18396884 - 06/10/13 11:31 AM (11 years, 7 months ago)

I've been reading the boards for a while but never needed to post until now. This place has been invaluable, so thank you all for the great info for my first grow!

I am getting a decent number of pins now across 8 cakes and I noticed one that looks strange. It was the first to appear and was cream colored at first, but it seems to have gotten darker and hasn't really been growing like the rest of the pins that appeared after it. I'm wondering if this is an abort/contam or if it's just an unusual looking pin. Any ideas?

Sorry guys, site is blocked at work so I haven't been checking in. I don't know much about the strain as the syringe was a freebie, but I know it said Ecuador. The rest of my pins are white stemmed with a cream color at the tip, and they look a little more like a tiny version of the classic shroom shape. This one started cream colored but has gotten a little darker, and it is a pea-sized sphere.

I am fanning 3-4 times a day and have reduced misting to about once a day ever since the pins appeared.

One thing that may be worth noting is that I removed the cakes from the chamber and put them on a table covered with a cardboard box for about 20 minutes a few days ago. I wanted to drill holes in the bottom of the chamber and add more perlite. I'm just hoping there were no contam issues from that. I'm probably just being paranoid though.

Thanks for the replies guys, this board is awesome

If it is an albino strain, it seems fine to me. If it halts growing and the top turns blackish/blue with a greyed body I would say it is an abort. However, I'm not sure if that is the case with albino strains. I've grown albino in the past but I do not recall seeing any aborts. Either way, if it is an abort you have little to worry about, as some aborts are usually expected - but if all the pins start to abort, then you might have a problem.

you're fae and misting seem fine(I usually mist twice per day, but that is just me) as for you're fc, is it a SGFC? If so you DEFINITELY need to drill holes in the bottom(all sides), because if you dont it defeats the whole purpose.

Yep, SGFC. I had sides/top drilled before and about an inch of perlite. I wasn't getting any pins so I read up some more and realized why the bottom is so important. Had to do some emergency surgery on it and made a mess in my kitchen, but I was able to get the holes in, add about 2-3 inches more perlite, and elevate the chamber on some books. As I was putting the cakes back in I realized I already had 3 pins I hadn't noticed lol

Do you think it might be aborted, or is that just a general observation lol

If you look carefully in those pics you can see one of my normal pins a bit lower and to the right. I can take more pics when I'm home if it would help!

also, I'm not sure what aborts look like yet, this is my first (trial) grow. I'm going to be doing a PE grow next now that I've refined my teks a bit

it doesnt look aborted(yet) to me. another possibility is that it is a mutant. I presume you used MS correct?

If my understanding is correct, yeah, this is MS. I inoculated from a syringe.

I assume mutants aren't nearly as cool as they sound...

Aborts have always appeared to me to be grey in color, perhaps with the cap a slightly darker grey, and then by the time they are aborted, the cap turns dark or blue, and the size of the pin shrivels a bit. Just keep an eye on it, people still like to collect and eat aborts.

for sure man, one time I ate approx. a gram and a half of straight aborts/pins and it hit me like a 4-5g trip.
