sorry if I'm restating something but, more finer perlite will perform better than more coarse, chunkier perlite. You get more surface area per square inch which in turns gives a higher evaporation rate.

So if larger perlite is working for you and you like it don't sweat it.

But its a fact smaller perlite with give you a higher RH

You statement is false! The finer perlite particles smash together and do not allow room for air circulation and evaporation thus it is less efficient at providing humidity.

As stated.

shit thats a good point.

But I don;t feel like searching for the quote

I'm restating an RR "fact" from a long time ago when I actually used perlite.

not really lookin to debate :shrug:

I know this from experience as I can only order perlite due to my location and I have been through different types. I do however understand where you are coming from though, some folks here on the Shroomery will only take heed to the advice of TC's and/or master of the trade like RR. Without further ado, I search and quote for the sake of making sure this thread holds accurate information.

A quote three months old. Here

I think its pretty much common sense anyway. I'm sorry but either your mistaken, or RR has got his facts mixed up. Are sure he wasn't taking about vermiculite?

We use vermiculite as a barrier to prevent contaminants from falling in so again, common sense suggests that the reason we do this is because the smaller pieces fit tighter together than the coarser pieces meaning that less air can get through if any.

Same with perlite. I think if you used really fine perlite you would find that the top inch or so would dry out after a while but the middle would stay moist and no water would ever evaporate.

It would create a sort of microenvironment under the top layer because no air would get through.

To clear things up, medium coarse perlite is the best for this because it holds just enough water. Very coarse perlite will probably dry out too quickly because there is too much free space between pieces for FAE.

sorry if my perlite terminolgy isn't up to date with the pros.

forgot theres small medium large grade.

pretty sure thats what I said (smaller will perform better than larger based on surface area)... or are you nitpicking the fact that i said, using finer perlite?

probably - either way im going against what i said and trying to debate this... im currently loading wbs jars into pc and have other errands to run...

But I cant resist checking up on the shroomery threads :wink:

fucking ADD :facepalm3:

You said finer perlite performs better. You gonna try tell me that you meant medium now?

Fine;
1. Very small in size, weight, or thickness: fine type; fine paper.

Coarse;
1. Consisting of large particles; not fine in texture: coarse sand.

Small/fine = bad
Big/coarse = good

Jesus!

All I was trying to add to the conversation was...

From a basic physics standpoint, the finer perlite has more total surface area, therefore it will evaporate more moisture off its surface and into the air.
RR

... I never tried to disagree with the fact that smaller perlite restricted air circulation. in fact I said it was a good point. Hopefully the information helped the OP....

but don't worry, apparently size doesn't matter... but you can argue that one too

You know what... I fucking hate people like you mr e... been registered for 2 months, have an excessive amount of posts for that time period - and think your wisdom is undebatable.

geuss what, the cakes in your sig needed more FAE and more misting. Boom.

And perlite doesn't hold or absorb water its a fucking mineral.

ignored. boom bitch.
