What kind of perlite for SGFC?

I didn't know there are different kinds of perlite. The one I have is sand like, particles smaller than .1 mm, but I've seen some pictures where single particles are clearly visible.
Is the kind I have okay to use in SGFC?

I was recently sent a giant bag of fine perlite, not only is does not provide humidity as efficiently but it also makes a mess and it is a pain to work with. So, I spent a few hours with large containers, a respirator, and a strainer sifting out the finer stuff. I was left with about half as much perlite but it was much coarser, more efficient, and easier to work with.
Depending on your location, it might just be easier to go out and get some of the coarser stuff.

Probably not mate. The coarser grade allows for more water to be stored within the perlite so that water can then evaporate from it. If its like sand then the chances are its not going to work hows it's supposed to.
The water in the perlite underneath wouldn't be able to evaporate because of the sand like pelite on top creating a sort of barrier.
You need perlite that is roughly 4-7mm otherwise it's not going to work how a proper SGFC was designed to work

Try to avoid Miracle Grow perlite if possible. The individual pieces are often too small and the bag usually contains alot of perlite dust. Try the internet or a Farmers Market.

Awww beat me to it by 43 seconds

Also OP, if you live in the UK then B&Q sell it. It's called Verve perlite and I think its their brand. Its perfect and not too much dust in the bags

Someone stated they were using the one on the left and another recommended the one on the right. I'm using the one on the left. Works great!

I don't know if this is normal or not.... but I get good enough air movement that when I let a cap open up I actually get a large amount of black spores on top of the cap that opened. It looks just like a cap had opened above it.
-------------------- A bit expensive but the largest clear tote I've found. Great if you want a large SGFC that can easily do both trays and cakes. If you decide to go all out on a SGFC, be sure to get coarse perlite. It keeps it cleaner and allows better FAE and humidity.

Looks like I'm f'd.
It was almost impossible to get this kind, now I have to search for coarse stuff. I'm not in UK or US, but thanks anyways.
Are there any recommendations what to do until I get proper shit, I'm already fruiting 2 cakes and other 4 are dunking. I don't have a humidity meter, but I don't think it's too low. Maybe it's because of weather, since we are having showers on daily basis currently.

just roll with what you got till you get the right stuff, just mist the cakes, that gives you your 99 percent humidity where you need it and fan it out as much as possible, with that type of perlite i would go as far as once every hour

I'll do as much as possible, although I'm very busy lately, so I can't do it every hour.
What if I push a stick through every hole in the bottom, so I create air canals? Would it be worse or better?

Since air can be broken down at the molecular level, you might get ok air exchange with the fine stuff. The problem is perlite will fall through the holes until it stops when it gets compacted and jammed there, which would seem to hinder air movement. Some people talk of a fine screen covering the bottom, but I haven't researched this for negatives since I wasn't in that position. Something maybe to research.

the screen wil stop the perlite from falling through but air movement will still be an issue, it too compact to get the air movement needed across the surface area of the perlite which in turn evaporates the water collected in divots in the perlite giving you humidity.

It doesn't fall through bottom holes because it's wet. Air circulation is, although looking from sides it looks like there are many cavities formed inside perlite layer.

the divots i'm talking about are in the surface of each individual pice of perlite, it will hold you off for the time being but your gonna want the course stuff asap

You could look around and see if you have hydroton in your area. Here is a link to what it looks like. It's basically just clay balls that do about the same thing that perlite does. http://www.ebay.com/itm/200797626679?hlp=false&var=

Okay, found something on the internet. Hopefully delivery guy comes quickly.
Lol, re-reading my previous post I realized I shouldn't have been eating aborts from cakes that pinned invitro before posting anything on the webz.

Okay, another problem. I birthed and dunked 4 cakes yesterday and they were put into FC today. All of them were 100% colonized. When I opened FC to fan it, a strange sweet almost chemical smell appeared. From what I've read it means problems, is it possible that one of my cakes has bacteria on the inside and is it a threat to other cakes (which were also dunking in same pot). I know I should've smelled the cakes after birthing them, but I completely forgot.
I smelled each of them now but I am unable to point out the problematic cake.

Did you consolidate for 1-2 weeks too after 100% colonisation?

Yes, slowest for 1 week, fastest for more than 2 weeks. Today when I fanned this smell almost disappeared. And yes, my dunk water was clean
