How do YOU protect YOUR filter?

I just got my flow hood built, mostly....
Theres still a few details to finish up, but its mostly done.
As I was putting the filter on the box, a question popped into mind. Whats the best way to protect the outside of my filter? I assume that having my hood out in open room air, theres bound to have some funky stuff landing on the outside surface of the filter.
Whats the best solution here? Maybe this isn't an AMT topic.

I never did anything. Just run it for a while before you work.

Spores and general undesirable debris won't be blown off the surface and into my work area?

I have heard of people cutting a piece of cardboard the size of the filter to cover the open face. While it is probably a decent idea, I also do not do anything to protect the exposed face of my hepa.

I had a related quandary. . .I was looking for a working platform that could: 1) travel with the unit, 2) protect the filter during transport or long term storage, and 3) wouldn't permanently alter the box. I found a 2-pack of plastic signage board at home depot for only a few bucks. It's very flat, rigid enough, and [for me] the perfect size. I duct taped it to the bottom, cut two velcro straps to adhere it in 'closed position'. . .I dunno, I think it works great, but how necessary it is I don't know. I do make sure the work surface is clean and bone dry before closing it up -- to avoid creating a moist enclosed environment around the hepa.

Well yeah, but it'll probably be blown off by the same wind. And don't you sanitize with alcohol before working anyway?
Also, there's already loads of spores and general debris on your work area. It happened at exactly the same time as when the stuff fell on your HEPA.

I put cardboard over the face for storage or travel for physical protection only. When I'm using it every day, I simply spray the face with lysol a few minutes before firing the unit up.
If it sits for a week and dust settles on the pleats, I'll use a hepa vacuum to suck the dirt off before spraying with lysol. In addition, be sure to let it run in a small, sealed room for an hour or so before beginning work so it can scrub the air in the room. RR

Now see. There's some info I totally missed.
I had no idea that I should spray the filter before use. Of course I would wipe the surfaces down, but I never thought of the filter itself.
Ill cut a piece of cardboard to fit, for the cover.
Thanks for the good info.

i've always just kept a mattress cover over mine, cardboard sounds more solid. i'll be crafting one asap. spraying the filter and room with lysol is good and DEFINITELY helps...but it's not necessary. As long as you let it run for an hour or so in a closed room, and follow other sterile habits you should be gold.
