Fried Spam and Rice
    #1839550 - 08/22/03 04:19 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

This is a real simple dish that consists of something that a lot of people hate...SPAM! I personally don't like spam much myself but this one is quite good...it's something that a lot of Filipinos eat for some reason (i guess cause so many Filipino Americans send processed foods like viennas sausages, spam and other such things in big boxes called balikbayan boxes).

A can of spam
cooking oil
white rice preferably jasmine rice
cherry tomatoes

Pop open the can of spam and slice the block into 1.2cm slices. On medium heat, put oil into a frying pan. Put the slices on the oil and fry till the sides are crispy and brown. Turn over the pieces of spam so they're evenly fried.

Whilst cooking the spam, boil some rice. It's really simple to do, just add some rice into a pot (or preferably a rice cooker) clean it twice so that you can discard any stones or other such things (at least u do this when you have a big massive bag of jasmine rice from an asian store), then fill the pot with water till the water reaches the first line on your pinky. That was a trick my dad taught me when to cook rice

Once frying is completed, soak the excess oil with a paper towel from the fried spam pieces, cut some ripe cherry tomatoes in half, serve with rice.

again, very simple to do and tastes ok as a snack or even as a main course!

Or as we do it in hawaii, wrap the spam and some rice in some dried seaweed. Tada, you''ve got a spam musubi.

YES! HAAAAhaahahahaha!!!!

Im Filipino and know the pain of of having to lug 20 (yes 20 fuckin big ass boxes) around Dulles airport last time I went back home. Very embarassing (Embarassment isn't in my parents vocabulary for some goddamn reason)

But no one beats the Hawaiians when it comes to Spam consumption. When I went to elementary school in Hickam AFB they served spam and rice for breakfast and shoyu chicken for lunch. Those were the days.

I like to make sinanag(you think I'd know how to spell it??): you take some fresh garlic (flips like a lot!) slice it thinly and brown it in some oil then throw in some day old jasmine rice and heat till warmed through, salt and pep. this is served with fried spam (sliced, sprinkled with sugar and fried) and a fried egg. SPAMSILOG!!

Ohhhh yum

I grew up on this kind of dish as well.

I remember just frying spam and then throwing in rice, along with some scrambled eggs.

Although I'd eat it with a side of Kim Chi.

I like Spam and Macaroni and Cheese. I even like it better than regular ham...

Just throw it in after youve stired the cheese and milk in, mix it a tiny bit and wholla... Good winter time comfort food for kids in Minnesota.

More than mere food, SPAM(tm) is for me
a hedonistic expression of gluttonous glee.
Mottled with pork fat, the pink cube engrosses.
My mouth takes it in, my intestine disposes.
Long have my arteries clogged to the sound
of sizzling SPAM(tm) when there's no one around -
furtively chewing or swallowing whole.
Triple bypass by forty, my medical goal.
