Cobweb Question
    #1835955 - 08/21/03 12:53 AM (20 years, 6 months ago)

My friend just harvested 75 wet grams of the first flush of a wbs casing and when he went to pick the aborts he noticed that the mycelium looked a little funky. Then he realized that it wasn't mycelium that he was looking at, it was cobweb! The casing was way too moist, which was his fault. It was the first time he had used coir and he thought it was too dry so he over misted it. Anyway, the surface was pretty well colonized by the mycelium, so I didn't notice when the cobweb set in. It probably happened pretty late in the fruiting process, or I would have noticed it earlier; most likely after most of the fruits were already fairly mature, but it could have set in earlier.

My question is, are the mushrooms my friend picked okay to consume? He trashed the casing after he found the cobweb, but he doesn't want to throw away his 75 gram flush if he doesn't have to. The fruits look healthy, but there was probably a few days that they were growing off of mycelium infected with the cobweb mold. From what I've read before, I get the impression that cobweb is pretty innocuous. So do you think his babies are okay?

I would say there ok to consume still, good that you
bined the casing, as it could have spored and spread to other projects.
