Pin or Get off the Pot!
    #1838960 - 08/21/03 11:31 PM (14 years, 2 months ago)

My friend has a fully colonized cake that has been sitting in the grow chamber for over 12 days without so much as a single pin. The entire cake is covered with thick, fluffy white mycelium, but it won't seem to start pinning.

My friend is getting impatient. What gives?

you need to fan more often -- cakes pin when the amount of CO2 in the environment decreases and temps drop and humidity stays very high

Temp = 72
Humidity = 92%

No dunking, just lots of fanning and misting. (But my friend did case the top of the cake with moist vermiculate).

Agreed, more fanning might help. But IMO the most common reason for not pinning when everything appears normal is that the cake was not actually fully colonized, and now it's been finishing colonization at slow speed due to lowered temp. IMO...

That may be the case, i.e., it is still colonizing to some degree.

Thanks for the tips everyone. I'll pass them on to my friend.

Very true. There are actually two problems presented by birthing early. While a cake can appear to be fully colonized, the center, or just beyond the outside layer can still be untouched by mycelium. Also, once the cake gets 100% colonized, the mycelium switches from "vegetative" growth, and goes into nutrient transportation mode while it builds hyphal aggregates (beginnings of hyphal knots). Even when the cake is 100% colonized, it still needs to digest and move all the nutrients required to start the formation of a mushroom. It takes time to do all this, and will be prolonged by birthing early.

Birthing early and too little humidity are the main causes for poor cake performance.

Again, my friend thanks you for your response. I will tell him to remain patient as it appears that the mycelium has not "finished dinner" yet and that he can expect it to produce only after it's meal is digested.

Moral to the story: Never expect dessert before dinner!
