depending on the strain, I usually do 1:1
no offense but I swear Ive seen this, no measuring coir/drying unused coir argument a thousand times.
Harsh Reality; everyone does things differently, everyone thinks their ways the right way.
this has to be a troll thread
It's far from a troll thread. I asked the same question about a month ago and Frank answered my question the same way this one was answered.
Sometimes you go over, it just happens. I don't have time to use a calculator either. I get it's simple math. You just go over sometimes and why not save it if you can?

I agree with Frank. If I have extra (which I never do anymore, but still...) I just toss it in a bucket and let it dry out. I might even just toss it back in the bag with my verm once it's dry.
But, that works best with the way I do things and the space I have. Your growspace may require different things.

I meant it has to be a troll thread based on the wording of the op's post, and mispelling, number of posts, etc.
the arguments valid, just saying I see a thread about it every other day

Nope, some people are just that dumb and too lazy to read.

Being left over with a bit of coir isn't so bad. Bricks of coir are cheap as chips and, as Frank said, one would waste too much time and effort to recoup that tiny bit of cheap coir which could easily be used in the garden or compost bin. Furthermore, if one is using a brick of coir then those things can be really tough to break up.

Well I think it's just great that people can take this wasteful approach to hobbies that they partake in! On the other hand, some people can't afford to just throw it in the garden.... like me! I don't have any coir left but I didn't throw any away. I made full use of the whole block! When I made my trays I used a junior hacksaw and just cut a quarter of the brick off for two trays. Then the rest was used for a mono which is now colonising. Overall it took me about 2 minutes to work out how much I needed and then cut the block up and put the rest back in the cupboard! How is this "a waste of time and effort"?
It is pure laziness taking that sort of attitude toward anything that you do in life.
I agree with Frank about laying it out and drying it or using it in flowerbeds if you have them, because then your not wasting any! I just don't agree with people like you that waste waste waste!

Do 20+ tubs a month, e man, and tell me how much you are worried about appearing lazy or wasting a pint of coir

I actually dump out the first few handfuls of coir on the curb for all my dead homies. Gotta keep it gangsta.

Migraineur has a very bad attitude towards time and money.
If he has money to waste on throwing coir out on the compost heap then why not use the correct amount of coir, and the money he saves he can send to charities that feed starving children all over the world? Or donate it to cancer research? I just don't agree with that wasteful attitude.
I'm not a bad person, i'm very down to earth and chilled.

Again, if I did 20 tubs a month, lets say 66qt tubs that are 26.5L x 16.0W x 12.25H inches, with a substrate depth of 3". I would use sub calculator and work out that for one tub, I would need 7.43qts of spawn, 8.91qts of coco coir and 5.94qts of verm thats at a spawn ratio of 1:2 - spawn:sub and 60:40 Coir/verm. So for 20 tubs I would need 148.6qts of spawn, 178.2qts quarts of coir but I would use 1 brick per tub if they were 66qt tubs and 119qts of vermiculite. That took me about 2 minutes to work out and I wouldn't waste anything because I know exactly what I need? I still don't get your point Frank. The amount is irrelevant its the principal
I really don't like people that waste things and think it is fine because they can always buy more. Greedy, gluttonous people that have no idea of the value of money IMO
The day will come when these people lose their job or end up with no money and they will struggle like hell to survive because of this bad attitude towards money
I hope i'm not being hostile again.....

Rude...
My point is that I never waste any substrate any more AND I never measure a thing beyond quarts of additives.
When I pasteurize my substrate in jars, I may toss a pint or so back into the compost. Usually though it would just sit in the jar until my next batch was up. So no waste there either, nor do I ever need to measure anything beyond quarts of additives.
My point is that a brick of coir, 1-3 quarts of verm, 1-2 quarts of an additive, and a handful of gypsum is perfect for tubs anywhere from 50qts on up to 100qts. Why would I want to measure anything, given the methods I just laid out?
My point is that you are overthinking it, that's what I've been saying all along. Even though you say it only takes you two minutes to plug all that info in, that's two minutes I spent hydrating my substrate. Not to mention to amount of time it takes to measure out precisely the amounts that little website shows you.
Big waste of time IMO

Someone's overly sensitive!
If you read what I wrote you will see that I actually encourage people to use it for gardening as opposed to throwing it away where it would end up as land fill. You do realise you can grow things other than mushrooms in coir, right? Furthermore, if you use it for vermicompost you end up with free fertiliser and worm castings which you can use in mycology.

Dude, none of that was aimed at you personally. You clearly have many many grows under your belt and you know what you are doing.
I'm not trying to get anyone to change religions, It's my opinion. I don't agree with waste and when someone states that they believe it is fine to waste as much coir as they want, simply because they think it's cheap, I am entitled to state my opinion.
None of this was aimed at you Frank. Sorry if thats how it was perceived...

Fair enough, I did just re-read and see that line. I didn't see it before.
to you too.
It seems my rant about world hunger and waste was all for nothing....
Anyone know of a thread where someone actually wastes stuff? I could move it to there then...
