Best casing pan?
    #1838134 - 08/21/03 07:06 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

Hey everyone. Question. What is, by all of your experiences, the best thing to use for a pan when casing? I hear plastic trays work ok but then i wonder how i am going to keep them sterilized. Would tinfoil type trays work? and also if u have any inout on steralizing the casing trays it would be very helpful. Thanks everyone! U guys always have great wisdom.

I've always used rubbermaid roughneck containers. Foil breadpans work as well, but I remember there was some debate on that. basically any container that doesn't react with moisture and opaque will do. Lysol is good for sterilizing, rubbing alcohol too.

Some people use the aluminum baking pans with good results. You can always bake them in the oven before hand, to sterilize them. I have heard they cannot be used over because the enzymes secreted by the mycelium will eat holes in them though.

I personally use plastic containers. At this point in time I am using zip-loc or gladware containers. I leave them clear so I can watch colonization, then when 100% is reached, a casing layer is applied and the container is given about 3 coats of flat black paint. Works quite well, they are cheap, and reusable.

But in the end use whatever container suits your needs. Clean it with some alcohol (Lysol causes mutations, and leaves residue), and be sure the sides will not allow ANY light to penetrate.

To give is to live...
