Problems....

Hey,
First off I'd like to say heeeeelllllo everyone. I'm new to the growth of mushrooms and I've recently tried my frost batch.
Here's what I did I tried a brf setup except I used durum flour instead of BRF. Used vermic and water in there to, boiled for 1.5 hours taped let sit over night, injected with A.albinos and blue meanie. Threw it into a dark closet and let it sit at between 75-80 F. Left it for 4 days and boom blue/grey/black mold in every one.
Question: Was it the durum?? I bleached the counters but my brothers house is let's say less than sanitary. I burnt the syringe until red, should I have done that after every injection?
I'm going to do BRF this time and use a pressure cooker. I've also considered using bird seed I'm going for bulk what's the best option for that.
I have a room in my house setup and sanitary for this now, it's small no drafts, and sealed.
I'll take some pictures and get a log going. I've read tons and tons on this site and I should not have substituted anything, I was in a rush which probably shouldn't have happened haha. What temp do I store unused syringes at? What's a good beginner strain? One that is high in potency and produces well.

Welcome to the Shroomery! Impatience is the biggest enemy of the mycologist. make sure you stick to the tek you choose step for step ingredient for ingredient in the beggining until you get a feel for things. If it says BRF, don't substitute! I'm not sure the nutritional value of durum so I can't say for sute it was this, but I can say for sure that if you used brown rice flour, I could rule that out lol. Yes, sterilize your needle tip with fire after every injection. You don't want to spread a contam. from a bad jar to a clean one.
When it comes to strains, if you're doing cubes, they're all just as hard, for a cube is a cube, is a cube. You can store your syringe in a refrigerator for about 6 months to a year, so I hear. Good luck, just slow down and you'll get it

soap and water is fine to clean your jars. use brf or grind your own brown rice.
sounds like you didnt sterilize your jars properly.
room temp and ambient light is what i reccomend for colonization.
and dont handle your jars excessively once inocculated it will disrupt your verm barrier

You got it right, I checked em almost every day picked one or two up Didn't sanitize enough for sure, and I think durum was the wrong way to go especially superstore bought garbage. The jars should have been cleaned before I put the stuff. Well I'm starting the new ones tomorrow and going camping so they will have lots of alone time. The room temp is hard to keep up I'm in BC it's getting warmer and warmer every day we hit 40 Celsius last summer. Ill have to find a way to combat that, I'm a refrigeration mechanic so that should not be to hard to do. Ill throw updates on tomorrow night when I get stuff going

If BRF is not available, you can grind your own brown rice, or you can use rye flour. Either way ensure that it is organic. Some rice growers use anti-fungal chemicals if it is non-organic.

Wheat or wheat flour. Surely you can grind ANY whole grain and substitute as needed.
Flame the needle prior to each injection. Use the same container to measure the ratios so they match. A plastic coffee can cut in half is good for about 12 jars.
Moisture is important as hell. When squeezed, it should form a lump, yet, no water should run out.

Didn't realize this about durum but its not very good stuff, pretty much man made I skim read about it just now so I could be wrong (check wiki)
BRF is very much available I have a Heath food store in town and I like 30 minutes from what could be the biggest hippy town in BC (I appreciate that fact). I grabbed some today as well as a few other goodies. Ordering some more spores Saturday.
So a little light is good for fast colonization? Between 70-75? I've heard up to 80 is okay.

indirect sunlight, like through a window where the blinds are closed are beneficial. and room temp is great for colonization 80 is a lil warm for extended periods of time imo but not a deal breaker necessarily

Oh trust me I've read. I'm quite disappointed in myself for rushing like that an using half assed ingredients knowing that molds are the number 1 killer. This is all new though and loss is bound to happen.

we all know that moment at first signs of contams when your heart sinks to your stomach lol a good remedy is finding a foolproof tek and then do double or even triple the amount of jars

You should refrain from mentioning which sponsor you got spores for active strains from, as they are not meant for growing.
