Some crazy lady cleared out her cacti to focus on those other succulents
It is all one plant in that pot, and a huge taproot

Beautiful plants! :drooling:
I'll be sowing my first Turbinicarpus for the competition, but I have a terrible feeling that it won't stop there...

First time seeing this thread. Very awesome cacti! Never grew them before, so I'm excited to see how the sprouts turn out.

Even in the best families: Turbinicarpus schmiedickeanus subsp. gracilis SB273, from Mesa Garden seed sown 2009. Spot the intruder (actually there were two more like this in the bag. It's Turbinicarpus (Gymnocactus) viereckii)

Bottom line: even the most respected dealers make mistakes at times.

Thanks, mate. I'm a bit obsessive and I decided I would have A LOT of Turbinicarpus one day. They are now showing their best.

Cheers,

Turbinicarpus valdeziaunus crest

So what do you do when the core rots, you remove most it?

That doesnt look so good. :undecided: I would probably cut that up into a few sections and graft them on top of something like a san pedro or other stock plant. Maybe try grafting a few areoles on pereskiopsis?

Good luck ferrel, it hurts seeing that.

Ouch. Never saw anything like that. Funny, though, it seems to be pretty dry inside - hence, no more rotting or progression. Could it be that it's just an extension of the freaky growth that a crest is?

Anyway, (re)grafting seems to be mandatory but I'll be damned if I know how or even where to start with it...

I basically just removed the core with a small spoon. It wont progress any further, I dont think. I iust want to leave it be. I have lost tons of cacti this year. Its been One of my worst for losses. Hundreds of dollars in losses. Just bugs and rot and deathly sun exposure. Terrible year. :huxleyfacepalm:

I feel for your losses, man. There are times when everything just seems to go terribly wrong, but it will pass and you'll have hopefully learned something through the process. :frown:
