Can I use a paperclip instead of one of those things to scrape spores
    #18371368 - 06/05/13 06:15 AM (10 years, 8 months ago)

I ran out of the little bendy things to attach to my scalpel tool.

Is it alright if I use the tip of a paperclip gently to scrape the spores?

Yes, make a loop, and use the loop.

I dont see why not aslong as you can flame sterilise it red hot and it doesnt melt.

Thanks, I used rubbing alcohol to clean the inside of a 1/2 pint jar before putting the spores inside the jar,

The alcohol may have not evaporated all the way, does 70% alcohol kill spores??

Also if there was a tiny tiny bit of alcohol in a spore syringe would it not work?

I would not use a syringe with alcohol in it, however slight. Use the syringe tek.

Boil for 20 minutes (ensure syringe is off the bottom), remove the syringe, flush 5 or 6 times with the boiling water discarding the water, and then fill one last time and cap the needle.

We consider 2/3 or 3/4 full, a full quart.

There must be some room left for shaking.

try shaking a jar thats been over filled, its not fun. I run smaller jars due to the size of my pressure cooker, and fille then  up more, and well it can be a challange to break up the grains properly once colinised. I end up usually with a few balls of grain.

I dont worry about exact ratios, i just go ok ive got x amount of jars of spawn i need twice the amount of spawn. the difference between 1/2 and 3/4 i dont think would drastically effect things that much when using sensible spawn ratios.

Some paper clips have a coating that burns. I would imagine that your spores and mycelium would be happier not having that coating -- or whatever it turns into when exposed to flame -- in their growth media. So if you're going to use a paper clip, I would at least try to burn off all of that coating and then clean the surface thoroughly to get rid of any remaining crud. And then, of course, flame sterilize is right before you use it. Hopefully cooling it in the agar will wipe any leftover toxic stuff off.

The reason real non-disposable inoculation loops are made of nichrome wire is that it's stable at high temperatures.

they use that stuff for the elements in e cig atomisers. Its fairly cheap to buy nichrome wire in varying thickeness's.

I was going to buy an inoculation loop until I learned that my eCig atomizer wire was the same material. I have 10 feet of inoculating loop, just need to fashion a handle.

Mmmm, e-cig :awesomenod:

I use a regular iloop but anything that functions the same and lacks a sharp edge will work great
