using XP, under C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\UserData I have a few odd looking files including a file called index.dat. What is it?

I seem to recall such files keep logs of everything done via IE, and if so, I would like to get rid of it (especially since I no longer use bullshit IE - firebird all the way  )

any thoughts and suggestions? Would a washing program like Window Washer (which I have installed) be adequate enough to totally clean out the files?

This link sells software which I've never tried, but they also give a rundown on these files.

Try a google for index.dat

I think I figured it out.

I guess the files are always locked while Windows is running, but can be cleaned before reboot (which Window Washer has an option of doing). If I am correct, the only way to get rid of such files is to uninstall IE all  together.

I wonder why Microsoft installs all these privacy destroying features...? How very Big Brother of them.

Thanks for the help
